The MPPT stands for the maximum power point tracking. The function of the MPPT algorithm is to extract the maximum power from the PV module, string, or array.
Why MPPT Algorithm Needs Boost Converter?
The MPPT algorithm alone cannot extract the power from the PV panel. This algorithm needs to be connected to the power converter to operate properly. The common power converter used for this application is the boost converter.
Problem in Designing a MPPT Boost Converter?
Since the operation of the MPPT boost converter varies depending on the irradiance and temperature of the PV panel, as well as the load connected to the MPPT boost converter, the conventional calculation of the boost converter cannot be used. A specific calculation needs to be used in order to calculate the MPPT boost converter to ensure a low ripple factor and continuous current mode operation.
Proposal on the Boost Converter Design Specific for the MPPT Application
The calculator is implemented using MATLAB GUI. The calculator is easily used. The calculator is based on the published paper in a Q1 journal.
