The device reportedly has high efficiency and runs at low cost, allowing industry to make use of a wider spectrum of solar energy.<\/p>\n<p>The most common way of collecting energy from the Sun is through photovoltaics. These solar cells produce electricity from sunlight, and they\u2019re so simple that they\u2019re built into everything from garden lights to the grid itself.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not the only way.\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/aerogel-solar-collector\/60403\/?itm_source=newatlas&amp;itm_medium=article-body\">Solar concentrators<\/a>\u00a0collect heat instead of light, focusing the Sun\u2019s rays to heat up a contained fluid. This can then be used to generate electricity \u2013 say as\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/direct-solar-steam-generation-power-plant\/18318\/?itm_source=newatlas&amp;itm_medium=article-body\">steam turning a turbine<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 or more directly, to heat homes or for other industrial processes.<\/p>\n<p>Normally these two systems are separate, but attempts have been made to pair them up into\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/solar-thermal-cell\/18346\/?itm_source=newatlas&amp;itm_medium=article-body\">single hybrid devices<\/a>, often resulting in lower efficiency or higher cost. But now researchers claim to have created a new hybrid solar energy converter that mixes the best of both worlds.<\/p>\n<p>The device looks like a satellite dish, with a small device suspended over the center of a parabolic collector. The dish part is mirrored, and focuses the sun\u2019s rays onto the box in the middle. The bottom of this section contains multi-junction solar cells, which collect and convert visible and ultraviolet light into electricity.<\/p>\n<p>But the clever part is that these cells redirect the infrared light \u2013 the heat energy \u2013 to a separate thermal receiver, higher up in the device. This receiver is essentially a cup-shaped cavity surrounded by pressurized water, which captures the heat and turns into steam.<\/p>\n<p>The team says that the total collection efficiency is 85.1 percent, meaning a very high amount of the Sun\u2019s energy is converted into either electricity or heat. The steam can be heated up to 248 \u00b0C (478 \u00b0F), which is a much higher temperature than many other thermal energy collectors. This means it\u2019s hot enough for many\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/papers\/view\/issue-brief-solar-thermal-energy-for-industrial-uses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">industrial processes<\/a>, such as drying, curing, sterilizing, and pasteurizing.<\/p>\n<p>The other advantage is cost.
