Another great bowling tip for you…..

Lift is what you do to the ball to get it off the ball return. When people talk about lift in bowling, they are usually referring to what they had to do ‘in the old days’ to get the ball to finish. With rubber and plastic and even some urethane, the exit of the fingers was usually a pulling upward toward the palm (referred to as ‘putting some fingers in the shot’). If you do that in today’s game, the powerful balls you are throwing behave very erratically and you hit the ball on the upswing, a very bad thing in the modern game. Today that behavior is kind of built in to the balls.

What folks are really describing when they mention lift is leverage. Leverage is having your body in the correct position to deliver the most powerful shot possible with the least amount of effort. For right-handers, it can be created by having your left knee bent deeply and angled to the left at the foul line with most of the weight on the outside of your left foot. You also should have your right leg at least 45 degrees to the foul line (sometimes even more) with your right knee bent and weight on your right foot. Your hips are square to your target path.

Strokers should have the left shoulder higher than the right. This will keep your right arm in close to your body and therefore your ankle, keeping the ball in your power at the delivery point. On a clock face, looking from the back, the left shoulder would be at about 10:00 and the right shoulder at about 4:00. Yes, it is true that I am saying your right shoulder should be lower than your left! How many times have you heard not to drop your shoulder? The difference here is that your left shoulder is up, not just your right shoulder down. This position will make for a delivery close to your body – leverage.

Power players need a little more shoulder angle, say 10:30 and 4:30 or even more. When first learning this, be sure to protect your ankle. This position puts the ball very close to your left calf because of the angle of your lower leg (which is going to the left). The next time you have the opportunity to see Pete Weber from the front, notice his shoulder angle. You’ll see the left shoulder much higher than the right but it is not considered that Pete ‘drops his shoulder’. Dropping your shoulder is only a problem when your other shoulder isn’t up and your body is in the way. Whether you are a stroker or a power player, this will be easier to accomplish if your left arm is out away from your body and your left hand on a plane above your head.

If you assume your normal finishing position at the foul line, you’ll probably find that your left lower leg is 90° to the floor and your right hand dangles straight down from your shoulder and 6″ – 8″ from your calf. Put your left arm and right leg wherever they normally are and have someone pull down on your right hand and see how little effort they must expend to pull you off balance to the right.

If you shift your weight so that your lower left leg is angled left and your knee is slightly left of your left foot, your arm will come closer to your calf. This could, but does not have to, include that your left foot is angled toward the 7 pin. Sometimes it’s easier to get your knee going left if your foot is pointed in that direction, but it’s not a requirement.

Put your left arm higher in the air and be sure your right leg is over and behind you with weight on it. Your friend will have a much more difficult time moving you at all much less pulling you off balance. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to have your left foot pointing left. Yes, I am saying that your foot does not have to be straight with the boards! When the left foot is pointing left, the knee more easily can be outside of the foot, the weight on the outside of the left foot, and ta-duum! – leverage.

This is what it feels like to be leveraged at the line. Check out the knee and shoulder position of the pros. This finish position works for creating leverage or they wouldn’t do it and this, or some modification of it, will work for you. You don’t have to be a power player to have this work. It puts strokers in a better position to deliver a great shot as well.

Here’s one of the most  important bowling tips I know:

If I had to pick one big secret in bowling, it would be body alignment. If you don’t get your body lined up correctly to execute the shot in your mind, you won’t be able to execute that shot. If you are lined up correctly and aren’t a highlight film getting to the line, you still have an excellent chance of succeeding or at least not paying a supremely high price for less-than-perfect. If you are not lined up properly and you execute flawlessly, it won’t matter. Proper body alignment can even cover up some execution mistakes, the same way a throw-it-like-you-mean-it follow through will cover up some errors. Keep in mind the explanation of this secret will generally only apply to strokers and rollers. Power players use a modified version to get the job done that will be discussed later.

A shot cannot be executed properly if you walk a different path to the foul line on every shot. Walk the direction of your projection. This means that you always try to walk parallel to your ball path. If you are playing down the boards (a shot which goes in the same direction as the boards) and you started on 20, you should finish very close to 20.

If, however, you are playing an away shot which is also known as out-and-in, bellying, and swinging the ball, you should slide toward the outside. This is not drifting. You are walking a straight line; it’s just not straight with the boards. It is walking parallel to your intended ball path. Think of the path you walk and your intended ball path as being railroad tracks!

How close you finish to where you started on an away shot depends on the severity of the angle you are playing. If you are only bellying the ball a couple of boards, you will probably end up at the foul line very close to the board on which you started. But if you’re trying to send the ball from 15 at the arrows out to the 2 board, you will have created more of an angle on the lane, therefore you need more of an angle on the approach. However, even that 15 to 2 shot doesn’t allow you to walk ten boards in the direction you’re throwing. To walk ten boards and throw the ball on the angle that creates would require a very wide lane indeed. Try this experiment. Without a ball in your hand and without looking down at your feet, stand on the approach and move wherever you need to move to feel that you could throw a shot which crosses 15 at the arrows and gets to the 2 board at the far end of the splice. Move your feet wherever they need to be do this. Pretty steep angle, huh? You are probably far left on the approach of the next lane. Ignore the feeling the ball might be going in the channel. This is only an alignment exercise.

Now let’s say the ball is not going to get to the 2 board until halfway down the lane. You should find yourself moving more toward the lane on which you are playing and, if you are doing this exercise on the right lane, may even feel the perfect alignment for this shot would be standing on top of the ball return!

What if you don’t want the ball to the two board until 45 feet down the lane? Ah, big exhale here. This looks more reasonable. Keep in mind that EVERY one of these three shots was at 15 at the arrows and the 2 board. The difference is always WHEN the ball got to the 2 board. That is what changed your angle.

Once you have your feet where you think they need to be, rotate your shoulders and hips until you feel like you would miss right and then rotate enough to feel like you’d miss left, all without moving your feet. Somewhere in between is the correct body alignment.

You can now see different angles on the lane and how getting your body alignment correct can make the shot look doable and even easy. It also points out the importance of having a line in your mind so that you can get your body aligned to execute that visualization.

How much you walk in the direction of your projection depends on that projection. You cannot walk straight with the boards and send the ball to the outside without affecting your armswing. Walk your lines. It’s essential to keeping your armswing in the groove to enable you to make consistent shots.

As a right-hander shooting a 10 pin, you don’t line up on the left side of the lane and walk toward the 7 pin and then throw your arm out to the right toward the 10 pin. You angle your body toward the 10 pin and then walk on that angle toward the objective. It is not a very steep angle. You should only end up at the foul line a couple of boards right of where you started and ever so slightly facing the right corner of the pin deck. That means if you start on 35, you end up on 33 or 32, not on 20. You don’t walk to the middle of the lane. It’s just a slight angle. An away shot is no different. You walk a path parallel to the ball path you have in your mind.

It is possible not to do this on an away shot and be successful. Power players tend to have a crossover step. They line up farther right than a stroker, walk left, usually with a crossover step, and realign their shoulders and hips to match the projection. When throwing the ball out and in, power players sometimes end up farther left than they started due to this crossover step/open shoulder style. It works for them because they get the shoulders and hips realigned to make a “T” to the line they’re playing. They sometimes have a tough time learning to point the ball, however.

When you have to point the ball (go up the boards or crossing boards from right to left for a right-hander), you will finish left of where you started because you are projecting the ball left. When you are shooting a 7 pin, you don’t line up on the right side of the lane and then walk toward the 10 pin pulling the ball across your body to make it go left. You angle your body slightly toward that left corner making a “T” with your shoulders and hips to the line you intend to throw. You walk a straight line that is angled toward the left side of the lane. The same is true of a strike shot; your angle is just less severe.

Bowling is a sport. You are an athlete involved in this sport even if you only do it recreationally. Proper stretching and warming up before you bowl will help prevent injury. There a few stretches you can do before you ever throw your first ball that will help prevent injury.

Grab your right ankle with your right hand and pull your foot up behind you until you touch your hip. Now do the same with your left hand and your left ankle. In addition to this, some people also stretch differently by grabbing the right ankle with the left hand and the left ankle with the right hand.

Hold on to a seat or table if you need to and stretch your right leg out behind you keeping your heel on the floor to stretch your hamstring. Don’t bounce and don’t try and stretch until you hurt. Just feel it pull slightly. Repeat with your other leg.

Before you put your wrist brace on, stretch your arm out in front of you and pull your fingers back keeping your wrist and elbow straight. Also pull the hand down with your wrist and elbow straight. This stretches the tendons you’ll be using in bowling and helps loosen them up as well as stretching the wrist.

Put your right hand on your left elbow and push the elbow up by your head keeping it bent. Then move your upper arm across your throat and push gently on the elbow toward your back. Repeat with other arm. This will loosen up your shoulder muscles.

These few stretches take about 30 seconds and can really help prevent injury. Check with your doctor before you do any stretching exercises, even these simple ones.

The ball should contact the lane as though it were an airplane landing. Cramming the ball INTO the lane instead of laying it ONTO the lane creates a very poor and inconsistent roll besides causing lane damage. That’s why knee bend is so important. You’ve got to get your body into a position to lay the ball down. The more upright you are, the higher the position of the ball for delivery. Banging the ball on the lane is loud, embarrassing, and kills the roll. Other than that, it’s a good idea.

Make sure your stance is comfortable and will allow you the easiest position from which to start your approach. A comfortable athletic stance includes the knees flexed 4″ or so, the spine tilted slightly forward by moving the hips back, and the ball held close to the body with your bowling arm never outside of your bowling shoulder.

You felt like no matter what you did the scrutiny would be ominous. You tried to be perfect in everything you did. You checked and rechecked your work to avoid being wrong and you were always uptight when your work was being reviewed.
