Biography

Dr. Shek Poi-Ngian joined Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in March 2010 as a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Structures and Materials, Faculty of Civil Engineering. He is currently an Associate Professor, a Research Fellow at the UTM Construction Research Centre (UTM-CRC), and the Program Coordinator for the Engineering Doctorate Program.

Dr. Shek obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) in 2005 and Doctor of Philosophy (Structures) in 2009, both from UTM. He is a member of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM, Membership No. 27125), a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM, P121402), and an active member of various professional bodies, including the Malaysian Society for Engineering & Technology (mSET), Malaysian Structural Steel Association (MSSA), and the Society of Engineering Education Malaysia (SEEM).

His academic portfolio spans teaching and learning, supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, research and publication, consultation, management, professional service, and community engagement. Dr. Shek’s primary research interests include steel connections, multi-storey steel frames, light steel framing systems, steel and composite structures, and load-bearing interlocking block systems.

To date, Dr. Shek has supervised or co-supervised 16 PhD graduates (6 as main supervisor, 8 as co-supervisor, and 2 ongoing), 15 Master by Research graduates (7 graduated, 5 ongoing) and 8 Master by Taught Course graduates, in addition to extensive undergraduate supervision. He has led 15 research projects (1 international, 2 national, 12 UTM internal) with a total grant value exceeding RM 1.6 million and has participated as a member in 42 other funded projects (international, national, and university-level) worth more than RM 7 million.

His scholarly output includes 32 ISI-indexed journal articles, 20 Scopus-indexed journal articles, 36 indexed conference proceedings, 4 book chapters, and 2 authored books, as well as technical reports and other publications. He has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences and has served as an examiner for Master’s and PhD theses.

Dr. Shek’s contributions to research and innovation have been recognized with a total of 57 awards, including 16 international awards, 9 national awards, 21 UTM awards, and 11 faculty-level awards, from prestigious platforms such as the Industrial Art and Technology Exhibition (INATEX), Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE), International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX), International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN), and Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF).

In addition to research, he has completed 45 consultation projects at UTM, generating over RM 880,000, and actively contributes to various professional and academic committees at the international, national, university, and faculty levels.
