I started my career at UTM since 1 April 1988 after graduating in degree in Mechanical Engineering from UTM. I later pursued a masters degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom in 1992, and PhD in Composite Structures from UTM in 2007. I call myself an expert in the field of Advanced Composites Material.

For nearly 30 years, I teach Mechanics courses (Statics, Dynamics, Solid Mechanics) and Instrumentation to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM) undergraduate students. I also teach Engineering Sciences to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) undergraduates. As part of teaching, I actively supervise and co-supervise many students of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (FKA) for their Final Year Projects. In addition, I also supervise Industrial Training students on a regular basis.

I am a member of a centre of excellence called the Centre for Composites (CfC), formerly known as Pusat Komposit (PUSKOM). In fact, I was one of its founding members, where I played a very active role in setting up this centre in 1995, and has always been a key person ever since its establishment. I was appointed as the Head of PUSKOM from 1997 to 2001. After my study leave, I was again appointed as the director in 2006. However, I had to leave this post at the end of 2007 to accompany my lovely wife to pursue her PhD in the United Kingdom. Under my leadership, the centre had acquired fame through its research products and generated income by organising short courses on advanced composites materials both internally and externally. During those times, the aim of these courses was to give awareness about  advanced composite materials as compared with the conventional engineering materials. The target audiences of these courses include people from the industry and government institutions like JKR and IKBN.

For several years since 1995, I actively participated in projects that involved the development of solar car, race car, sports car and solar bicycle prototypes under the Automotive Aeronautics Research Development Group (AARG) UTM. These technology demonstrator type of projects had received special research grants from UTM and achieved national and international fame.

In 2003 to 2004, I was involved in the construction of the first GFRP composites bridge in Malaysia, i.e. UTM Composite Bridge, and the development of a Hovercraft prototype. Even while I was on study leave pursuing my PhD, my active participation in research projects maintained. In 2006 to 2016, I was involved with a group of Hydraulics and Hydrology researchers from FKA to develop trash-traps. Four generations of off-line system type of trash-trap prototypes were developed and tested. The research found that these trash-traps had commercial potential and they were capable of preventing trash from entering rivers from the water system.

In 2016, through CfC and under the Institute of Vehicle System and Engineering (IVeSE), I became the project leader for a special project to design the body structure of AMFIBIA prototype, i.e. ADRUV UTM. This prototype had very high commercial potential in the rescue services, especially during flood.

Since 1995, my involvement in research works either as project leader or team member secured grants amounting to more than RM3 million. I started supervising postgraduate students since 2013, and to date I have four PhD students who are in the process of submitting their theses. I have three masters (research) students; one of which has graduated. Together with my co-researchers from CfC and FKA, I also co-supervise postgraduate students.

I am also actively involved in consultation activities. I provided consultancy services to government agencies like MARA and JKR, and industry like BLT Fibreglass Sdn. Bhd., Atostech Fibreglass Sdn. Bhd. and Hasilman Sdn. Bhd. in projects involving the fabrication of high capacity water tanks. From 2015 to date, together with a team of JKR researchers, my expertise in composite has been applied to a hydrokinetic research project for rivers in Sarawak. My expertise in testing of CFRP materials has also been shared with a company named SIKA Kimia Malaysia ever since 2001. This expertise is now also being shared with the Philippines SIKA since 2016.

My research interests include, but not limited to, composites structure durability, recycling composites, biomimetics design, composites testing, natural fibre composites, hybrid composites, composites bonding and polymer mortar composites.
