UTM FAB PhD candidate won Best Paper Award in Canada

Congratulations to Noor Azeyah Khiyon, PhD candidate at the UTM Faculty of Built Environment under the supervision of Dr Sarajul Fikri bin Mohamed, for winning the Best Paper Award at the 21st Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors 2017 in Vancouver, Canada.

Her paper, entitled ‘Whole Life Cycle Costing for Sustainable Facility Management’ which deals with the very relevant issue of sustainability in today’s world. Noor Azeyah is also an academic staff at the University of Reading Malaysia.

Five UTM engineering & technology fields ranked in the top 100 in the world

JOHOR BAHRU, 8 March 2017 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has continued to improve in the 2017 QS World Ranking by Faculty when five of its engineering and technology fields were listed in the top 100 in the world.

The fields are of Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,  Civil & Structural Engineering, and Computer Science & Info Systems.

The field of Architecture / Built Environment also ranked in top 100 in the world.

In the latest rankings released today, UTM’s rank in the field of engineering and technology improved from 100 in 2016 to 90 in 2017.

While the field of Social Sciences and Management increased from 211 in 2016 to 204 in 2017 and the Arts and Humanities rose from the position of 372 in 2016 to 296 in 2017.

For the first time the field of Natural Sciences ranked number 378 among the 400 best in the world.

Meanwhile, all UTM’s engineering and technology subjects namely Mechanical Engineering, Civil, Electrical, Chemical and Architecture were listed in the top 100 in the world by QS World Rankings by Subject 2017.

The Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Computer Science subjects are three new subjects listed in the latest world top 100 for 2017, while Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Architecture subjects maintained their positions in the top 100 since 2016.

In the latest rankings, four more subjects such as Environmental Sciences and Materials Sciences improved from the 151-200 group in 2016 to 101-150 group in 2017, Education from the 201-250 in 2016 increased to 151-200 in 2017 and Chemistry in the position of 251-300 in 2016 rose to 151-250 in 2017.

This means seven subjects have risen to a higher level in 2017 than in 2016.

This year, four new subjects, Biological Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry, Linguistics as well as Modern Languages, have been listed in the QS World Rankings by Subject 2017.

Overall 16 subjects offered by UTM have been listed in the top 400 in the world compared to 12 in 2016.

The increase was contributed by the favourable terms of the scores for all indicators, especially academic reputation and citation, to make UTM among the best university in engineering and technology in the country.

The latest success was in line with the UTM Global Plan to transform UTM to become one of the world’s top 50 universities in the field of engineering and technology in 2020.

The UTM Global Plan 2012-2020 aims to place UTM as a leading university that is known internationally in terms of scientific contribution, human capital development, innovation-based economy, impact on Malaysia and the region, prominence at the international level as well as becoming a brand to be reckoned with.

Phu Yen University students visit Faculty of Education UTM

JOHOR BAHRU, 3 August 2017 – A delegation from Phu Yen University, Vietnam led by Vice Dean of Faculty of Foreign Language, Ms Bangtam Le came to Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for 10 days to participate in an international study visit program.

The delegation comprised of four lecturers and 10 undergraduate students from Faculty of Foreign Language, Phu Yen University.

The program was initiated after a Letter of Cooperation between Faculty of Education, UTM and Phu Yen University was signed in April 2017.  The program was from 24th July 2017 until 2nd August 2017.

Among the workshops held at Faculty of Education for the visitors were workshops on Teaching ESL/EFL Writing, Introduction to UTM Toastmasters Club, The Use of Educational Technology in Teaching, Higher Order Thinking Skills in Teaching, Introduction to Malaysian Culture & Language and 21st Century Teaching and Learning Approaches.

In order to enrich their experiences on the process of teaching and learning English in Malaysia, they also had the opportunities to visit two secondary schools namely SMK Mutiara Rini 2 and SMK Medini.

In addition, a visit to Imagineering Institute Iskandar Puteri was also arranged for them. During the visit, they were exposed to the latest invention and technology created by the researchers in the institute.

All participants feel that the activities benefit them in many ways and they look forward to share the positive experiences with their peers and colleagues at Phu Yen University.

29 July: UTM website ranks the second highest among Malaysian University listed by the Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities July New Edition.

– Regarding PRESENCE. Size (number of pages) of the main webdomain of the institution. It includes all the subdomains sharing the webdomain and all the file types including rich files like pdf documents. Weight:5%
– Regarding VISIBILITY. Number of external networks (subnets) originating backlinks to the institutions webpages.After normalization, the maximum value between the two sources is selected. Weight: 50%
– Regarding OPENNESS. Number of citations from Top authors according to the source Weight: 10%
– Regarding EXCELLENCE. Number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited in 26 disciplines. Data for the five year period (2010-2014) New Weight: 35%

UTM is currently at the second place at the national level after UM, followed by USM, UPM and UKM.

Landscape UTM Alumni Workshop Series 2017

The department of Landscape Architecture from the Faculty of Built Environment, UTM Skudai held a monthly workshop: ‘Landscape UTM Alumni Workshop Series 2017’ organised by the final year students. The main objective of this workshop is to share landscape project input to all landscape final year students. Therefore, LAr. Lee Wooi Keat an Alumni of Landscape UTM from CPG Consultants PTD LTD, Singapore was invited to give a short talk on ‘Place Making: Meaning of Space’.

LAr. Lee Wooi Keat shared his office projects, the Riversound Residence and Boon Lay Field which are both located in Singapore. Based on the project examples, he explained about the space design consideration in order to design a space in making a place. He also concluded his talk with quotes “Understand the place when creating the space”. This workshop has benefited all students to maximize the opportunity to obtain fruitful input from practicing Landscape Architects.

Negeri Sembilan State Health Department Inks MoU with Azman Hashim International Business School, UTM on Training & Development

NEGERI SEMBILAN, 14th AUGUST 2017 – Azman Hashim International Business School, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM IBS) officially announced the cooperation between the Negeri Sembilan State Health Department in training and development.  One of the initiatives in this collaboration is the offering of Master of Business Administration program with concentration in Healthcare Management specially designed specifically for medical practitioner and administrators serving in the health department around Negeri Sembilan.

UTM International Business School (UTM IBS) has currently arrived at the 3rd phase of our proudly acknowledged program, the Swiss Innovation Challenge Asia 2017. Among a line-up of networking events arranged to foster new industry-academia relationships and future collaborations, UTM-Swiss Malaysian Business Association (SMBA) Networking Event, which specifically aimed to network UTM with the Swiss-Malaysian Business Association (SMBA) and the participants from various industries/students/research institutes from all over Malaysia and Switzerland, was successfully held at UTM Kuala Lumpur on 20th July 2017, at 6.30pm. We were proud to have His Excellency Michael Winzap, the ambassador of Switzerland to Malaysia, and Prof. Dr. Nordin bin Yahaya, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) of UTM, to grace the historic event.

The event started with a welcoming speech by Prof. Dr. Nordin. In his speech, he highlighted the fact that Swiss Innovation Challenge (SIC) Asia 2017 is not just a challenge that focuses solely on rewarding innovative ideas, but also serves as a platform of championing national agendas and making the world a better place to live and evolve by nurturing such innovative ideas. Also, as the Swiss Innovation Challenge is a non-profit initiative, he sincerely hoped to be able to garner financial support by raising at least RM 500,000 per year to cover the costs for promotions, expertise, event management, prizes, and operating expenses for the project. By then, the Swiss Innovation Challenge initiative will be able to sustain itself and in turn benefit new businesses as well as expand the Swiss-Malaysian legacy that has been persistent since 1887.

 

Next, His Excellency Michael Winzap gave a greeting note to the audience. His Excellency was delighted to be invited to UTM for the third time and looked forward to come again. His Excellency also stressed the essential role of the embassy in bringing two countries closer and establishing cooperation and knowledge sharing in different sectors that would immensely benefit both countries, with SIC Asia 2017 being one of the best testimonials of such cooperation and unwavering friendship. After the speech, Mr. Chris Meyer, President of the Swiss Malaysian Business Association (SMBA), was invited to the stage to give an introduction to the organisation to the audience from Malaysia as well as different regions.

A sharing session by Laurent Maillefer, business unit manager at ABB Malaysia which is the leading company in power and automation technologies, was conducted. His informative speech in this sharing session revolved around the theme “How Connectivity is Changing the Face of an Industry” from the entrepreneurial perspective. He highlighted ABB’s ambition in unlocking the digital potential in the industry, which is in line with the ideas of industry 4.0 that are evolving the landscape of all industries more rapidly than ever across the globe.

After that, another sharing session was conducted of which Dr. Rahmat Shazi, the Director of Strand Aerospace Malaysia was invited as the speaker. Strand Aerospace Malaysia (SAM) is the leading aerospace engineering services player in Malaysia. It is also the strategic engineering services provider to Spirit Aerosystems Malaysia and has supported manufacturing and engineering for Spirit in the UK and Europe. Being an experienced academic and an entrepreneur, Dr. Rahamat presented his speech titled “Industry 4.0: Academic & Industrial Synergy” by sharing with the audience the key concepts of Industry 4.0 and the movement of this revolution around the world, as well as how a tertiary institution can be the propellant of industry 4.0 in order to transform the current industries to become highly integrated based on cyber-physical production systems that combine communications, IT, data and physical elements.

After the sharing sessions, the Swiss and Malaysian entrepreneurs as well as the SIC participants had fruitful interactions and networked with each other over dinner. The live band charmed the guests with their celestial music by performing several songs including well-known Raya songs in conjunction with Hari Raya season, as well as English songs and Hindu songs. The event ended at 8.30 pm.

SIC team is very proud to have successfully organised the international level networking event that served as the platform to establish and strengthen friendships and future collaborations between the two counterparts.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UTM FKA and CSDC Academy Sdn. Bhd.

    

The Faculty of Civil Engineering (UTM FKA) will start a collaboration with the Construction Skills Development Centre (CSDC Academy Sdn. Bhd.), a subsidiary of IPM Global Berhad. CSDC Academy Sdn. Bhd. is a training center providing professional short courses and seminar to the construction community. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed by both parties on 22 August 2017. The purpose of the MoU is to establish cooperative agreement in the fields of education and academic research between UTM FKA and CSDC Academy Sdn. Bhd., for a period of three years. The objective of this MoU is to formulize long-standing cooperation between the two parties, in providing professional short courses and seminar program, joint research and consultancy activities, joint organization of seminars and academic meetings, as well as exchange of academic materials and other information. The establishment of this partnership aims to offer quality training related to construction industry in Malaysia to help companies and individual to retain competitiveness in the industry. The ceremony was held at the Dato’ Yusof Abu Bakar Meeting Room (BMU) with UTM FKA was represented by Prof. Dr. Khairul Anuar bin Kassim, Dean of Faculty of Civil Engineering and Managing Director of CSDC Academy Sdn. Bhd., Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Goh Hui Hwang.

Promoting UTM at the EXPO 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan

JOHOR BAHRU, 21 August 2017 – Dr. Abdul Halim Abdullah, a senior lecturer of Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was invited as a speaker at Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan in conjunction with Malaysian Education Week.

The Malaysian Education Week was held from 14th to 18th August 2017 at the Malaysian Pavilion.  Expo 2017 was an international event which took place from June 10 to September 10, 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan. The expo had attracted participations from more than 100 countries and 10 international organizations.

Dr. Abdul Halim delivered his talk on innovative teaching and learning practices in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) generally and Faculty of Education UTM specifically in developing graduate competitiveness and creativity.

He shared about New Academia Learning Innovations (NALI) model which is introduced by UTM in order to foster soft skills among students and to nurture creativity among lecturers in diversifying teaching and learning strategies in classrooms.

In addition, Dr Abdul Halim also highlighted the establishment of Student-Centred Learning (SCL) Rooms at Faculty of Education UTM which can be used to fulfil all types of teaching and learning experiences.

The SCL rooms are designed to support the implementation of NALI since they possess flexible learning environment. In addition to Dr. Abdul Halim, a PhD student from Faculty of Education UTM, Ahmad Mustaqim Yusoff was also invited to take part in a forum organized during the expo.

The set-up of UTM booth in the expo had given Dr. Abdul Halim the opportunity to promote UTM academic programs and UTM Students Exchange Program to the expo visitors. Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) also arranged visits to two universities located in Astana.

Malaysian delegates visited Nazarbayev University and Eurasian National University (ENU).

The visit to ENU was also joined by Deputy Secretary-General (Development) of MOHE, Datuk Nik Ali Mat Yunus  and Malaysian ambassador to Kazakhstan, His Excellency Syed Mohamad Bakri Syed Abd Rahman.

It is hoped that the participation of Dr. Abdul Halim in Malaysian Education Week at Astana 2017 Expo will ensure UTM is recognized globally.

Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate (FGHT), UTM Inks MoU with Cambodian Valuers and Estate Agents Association (CVEA)

Kuala Lumpur, 25th  August 2017 : Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate (FGHT) officially announced the cooperation with the Cambodian Valuer and Estate Agents Association (CVEA).  The intention to establish this cooperation resulted from a preliminary discussion between RISM Johor and the staff members of Department of Real Estate, and the Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate, and further followed by an official visit by CVEA to Department of Real Estate on the 5th of March 2016.

CVEA is a real estate professional association and a non-profit organization registered under the Ministry of Interior, Kingdom of Cambodia, and is primarily entrusted to develop and promote valuation and estate agency professions in Cambodia. CVEA’s mission is to serve all members to gain optimum opportunities and real estate market competitive advantage in Cambodia through strengthening professional competency, promoting business ethics, integrity, accountability, advocacy, and increase real estate market demands, which is synonymous with the core values of real estate education that UTM provide and well-known for in this region .

It is hoped that through this cooperation more academic programmes, research and human capital development will be implemented for the benefit of both institutions. Both parties have agreed to  strengthen the relationship through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which includes the following:

  1. Visit and participate in academic, training and research programmes;
  2. Promote and exchange of information and materials of mutual interest;
  3. Promote the exchange of scientific materials, publication and information;
  4. Promote and facilitate the exchange of research, training and teaching of staff as well as students;

It is hoped that this memorandum of understanding will pave the way for impactful collaboration between both parties as planned, and UTM as a knowledge institution is always committed to the advancement of knowledge in this region. In this regard, Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate is also keen to collaborate with an institution of higher learning from Cambodia to establish local real estate diploma and degree programmes that suit the demand of the market with the support from CVEA.
