Pelajar UTM sapu bersih hadiah Pertandingan Akhir Analisis Senario Habitat 2017 Peringkat IPTA | UTM

JOHOR BAHRU, 29 Oktober 2017 – Kumpulan pelajar Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) membolot semua hadiah dalam Pertandingan Akhir Analisis Senario Habitat 2017 Peringkat IPTA anjuran Kementerian Kesejahteraan Bandar, Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan (KPKT).

Pemenang tempat pertama (UTM5), kedua (UTM4) dan ketiga (UTM3) Pertandingan Analisis Senario Habitat 2017 bersama Dr. Ani Ahmad (enam dari kanan), Pengarah Bahagian Dasar dan Strategik, Jabatan Kerajaan Tempatan, KPKT.

Tempat pertama dimenangi oleh kumpulan pelajar tahun tiga Sarjana Muda Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah (UTM5) yang membawa pulang wang tunai sejumlah RM5,000 serta sijil penyertaan.

Kumpulan ini dianggotai oleh Wan Muhammad Aqib bin Wan Mohamad Ashaary, Josephine Lee Siaw Ling dan Nagananteni a/p Subramanian.

Peserta pertandingan akhir analisis senario 2017 dari Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM1, UTM2, UTM3, UTM4 dan UTM5) bersama pensyarah pembimbing, Prof. Madya TPr. Dr. Hamid Saad dan Puan Noordini Che` Man.

Manakala, tempat kedua dimenangi oleh kumpulan pelajar tahun empat Sarjana Muda Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah  (UTM4) yang menerima hadiah wang tunai RM3,000 berserta sijil penyertaan.

Kumpulan ini diangotai oleh Ellida binti Samsudin, Muhammad Zulfadhli bin Mohd Zin dan Mohd Jamsyeer Khan bin Jalaludin Khan.

Sementara tempat ketiga yang menawarkan hadiah wang tunai RM2,000 berserta sijil, dimenangi oleh kumpulan pelajar pascasiswazah Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah (UTM3).

Kumpulan ini terdiri daripada Muhamad Firdaus bin Johan dan Mohamad Azal Fikry bin Ali.

Manakala tenaga akademik Prof. Madya TPr. Dr. Hamid  Saad, Dr. Siti Hajar Misnan dan Noordini Che` Man bertindak selaku pensyarah pembimbing.

Dr Hamid berkata, semu lima pasukan yang disenarai pendek memasuki pertandingan akhir daripada perserta UTM, iaitu Kumpulan UTM1, UTM2, UTM3, UTM4 dan UTM5.

“Pertandingan Analisis Senario Habitat merupakan satu pertandingan yang bertujuan melatih peserta berfikir secara kreatif dan logik bagi mencari jalan penyelesaian kepada masalah habitat yang dikemukakan.

“Di samping itu, ia mampu meningkatkan kemahiran dalam mengenal pasti isu-isu semasa, menganalisis, dan menggalakan peserta membuat penyelidikan di lapangan,” katanya.

Beliau berkata, peserta digalakkan mengumpulkan maklumat yang komprehensif bagi melaporkan dalam format `PowerPoint’ dengan tidak melebihi 20 slaid.

Bagi kategori IPTA satu penulisan tambahan tidak melebihi 1,000 patah perkataan perlu dikemukakan kepada KPKT bersama slaid pembentangan untuk disenarai pendek bagi pertandingan akhir.

“Semasa pembentangan lisan untuk sesi pertandingan akhir, pelajar dibenarkan membuat penambahbaikan slaid pembentangan (format `PowerPoint’) serta menggunakan bahan persembahan sokongan, seperti model, poster, montaj, video serta ringkasan kajian,” katanya.

Pertandingan itu terbahagi kepada tiga kategori iaitu Sekolah Menengah Rendah (Tingkatan 1-3), Sekolah Menengah Atas (Tingkatan 4-6) dan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Awam (IPTA).

Setiap kategori mempunyai analisis senario yang berbeza dengan mengenal pasti isu dan masalah semasa, metodologi dan analisis kajian serta cadangan penyelesaian dan outcome.

Tema Analisis Senario bagi kategori Sekolah Menengah Rendah pada tahun ini ialah Penjanaan Pendapatan, Sekolah Menengah Atas ialah Pemberi Pinjam Wang, dan IPTA ialah Perumahan.

]Majlis penyampaian hadiah telah diadakan di Dewan Kristal, Aras B1, KPKT sejurus pertandingan akhir selesai.

Hadiah disampaikan oleh Pengarah Bahagian Dasar dan Strategik, Jabatan Kerajaan Tempatan, KPKT, Dr. Ani binti Ahmad.

“Kemenangan tempat pertama, kedua, ketiga serta kelayakan dua kumpulan lagi ke pertandingan akhir membuktikan kualiti pengajian Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah di UTM berada pada tahap yang terbaik, komprehensif, dan mampu bersaing dengan IPTA lain di negara ini,” katanya.

PETALING JAYA: Facebook users can now use ‘The Flooding in Penang, Malaysia’ Crisis Response page to stay informed and coordinate help for the Penang floods.

Available at http://bit.ly/2hIa6oU, the page also provides the Safety Check feature so people can connect with their friends and loved ones.

According to Facebook’s Help Centre, Safety Check is activated if enough people in an affected area post about an incident.

“When an incident such as an earthquake, hurricane, mass shooting or building collapse occurs where people might be in danger, a global crisis reporting agency alerts Facebook,” it added.

People in the area may receive a notification from Facebook to mark themselves safe.

Other can check in on their friends in the affected area with the ‘Ask If Safe’ feature,

Clicking on the Support tab will aid Facebook users in giving or finding help, should one be in the affected areas.

As of Sunday night, there are 20 posts asking for assistance and over 150 posts offering help, with people extending aid in the form of food, water, transportation, school uniforms, and even pet supplies.

Good Samaritans can also create or donate to fundraisers to support recovery efforts.

Penang sought help after typhoon-like winds and torrential rain lashed the state since Saturday (Nov 4).

International Conference on Advanced Technology 2017 (ICAT 2017) | UTM 

Kuala Lumpur, 10 October 2017:- UTM Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur held an international conference called the International Conference on Advanced Technology 2017 or known as ICAT 2017. This international conference was held on 10 October 2017 at the Renaissance Hotel, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. The ICAT2017 was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Sri Zohari Bin Haji Akob, the Secretary General, Ministry of Works, Malaysia. The first ICAT2017 is a combination of three international conferences held simultaneously which are; ‘3rd International Conference on Human Capital and Knowledge Management (ICHCKM)’, second, the ‘2nd International Conference on Sustainable Urban Landscape Design (SUDLiC)’ and the third conference ‘1st International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure (SustaIN)’. These three conferences promoted current issues relating to human capital, knowledge management as well as urban landscape designs and sustainable infrastructure. This conference provided the space and platform for presentation papers and participants to discuss current issues.

The presenters and participants of the conferences were from within and outside the country such as from Thailand, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Japan, United Arab Emirates and from United Kingdom. Most of these presenter and participants included academicians and professionals who have an in-depth interest in the related issues. For this conference, 88 scientific papers were presented. Among the topics  presented in this conference include issues such as sustainable design and construction, technology and innovation, road and sustainable transportation systems, recycling and renewable energy towards low carbon, environmental impacts from sustainable development, sustainable facility services, policies in sustainable development and many more.

Apart from the presentation of papers by academics and professionals, the conference also held a forum where participants from all three conferences gathered with respectable panelists. The title of the forum was ‘Sustainable Development Goal 2030 – The Challenges of Sustainable Development Realising Dreams from Realities’. Three key panelists were invited to make this forum a success. They were, Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Datuk Zulkefli A. Hassan (Chairman of Board of Governors, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)), Prof. Ir. Dr. Ade Sjaruddin (Civil Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung) and Dr. Shuhana Shamsuddin (former urban design lecturer, UTM).

UTM-LCARC Co-organises High Profile 3rd International Conference of Low Carbon Asia and 6th LoCARNet Annual Meeting | UTM 

Bangkok, 1st November – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), through the UTM-Low Carbon Asia Research Centre (UTM-LCARC), Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment, co-organised the three-day 3rd International Conference of Low Carbon Asia (ICLCA 2017) and the 6th LoCARNet Annual Meeting with the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonbury (KMUTT) in Bangkok, Thailand.  The ICLCA and LoCARNet annual meeting, which assembled over 150 participants hailing from 16 countries, saw the presentation of six keynotes and some 120 papers that collectively aimed at advancing sustainable low carbon emission development in Asia.

The international conference and annual meeting of the rapidly growing low carbon Asia research network was officiated by Dr. Wijarn Simachaya, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Thailand.  The event also featured a keynote address by Y.Bhg. Prof. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Prof. TPr. Dr. Ho Chin Siong, Director, UTM-LCARC delivered a welcome speech with other key senior officials from Thailand and Japan.  Prof. Ho also chaired, mediated and spoke in several conference sessions in the three days of the conference, as well as doing the important plenary wrap-up on 3 November 2017.

The three-day high-profile event saw the launching of the LoCARNet Bangkok Declaration that outlines LoCARNet’s strong stand and policies on Asia’s contribution to the Paris Agreement.  The Declaration that is co-drafted by UTM-LCARC will be released at the upcoming 23rd Session of Conference of the Parties (COP 23) in Bonn, Germany in November 2017.

14th International Congress of Asian Planning Schools Association (APSA 2017), Tsinghua University, Beijing, China | UTM 

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment (FAB), UTM sent the largest delegation to the recent 14th International Congress of Asian Planning Schools Association (APSA 2017). The Congress was held at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China from 12-14 October 2017. Twenty-three (23) UTM delegates comprising of 9 lecturers and 14 students led by Prof. Dato’ TPr. Dr. Ahmad Nazri Muhamad Ludin presented a total of 20 papers and 3 posters to more than 150 international participants. “Reshaping Urban and Rural Development through Planning” was the main theme of APSA 2017 and it featured papers/presentations/posters across six tracks encompassing, Governance, Identity Heritage, Solidarity Equity, Smart Intelligence, Sustainability Environment and Planning & Education. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, FAB, UTM is a member of the Asian Planning Schools Association (APSA) and had hosted the APSA 2015. The Congress is held biennially. The UTM delegates had envisaged establishing academic networking with Tsinghua University, as it is the most prestigious university in China and the Department of Urban Planning of the university is ranked the top urban planning education institute in China since 2012.

Academic Visit to Tokyo City University (TCU) by Department of Landscpe Architecture | UTM 

Department of Landscape Architecture staff visited the Faculty of Urban Life Studies at Tokyo City University (TCU), Todoroki in Tokyo from 16 to 18 October 2017. This is an academic visit and future research collaboration stipulated in the MOU between UTM and TCU dated 12 January 2016.

Mural Art Painting for GEMPAK Community Service in UTM 2017 | UTM

A group of Landscape Architecture students of Faculty Built Environment formed 3D Mural Wall Art team supervised by Dr. Lee Yoke Lai and Dr. Sapura Mohamad had accomplished mural art painting at Faculty Science-C18, UTM. This mural art project was started from 5th April and completed on 8th April 2017 collaboration with Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPM) and patron by Earth Society members under GEMPAK’17 program conducted by the MPM.

The mural art theme ‘Where Great Minds are Nurtured’ is in line with the faculty vision which is to be known around the world in science and mathematics field that produced experts in its fields. Thus, the mural wall art design contained three major elements to epitomize Physics, Chemistry, and Science Mathematics Departments representing Faculty Science. Indeed, the mural painting inspirations have nurtured a great teamwork among UTM communities.

Department of Quantity Surveying hosted the 3rd Programme for QS Registration Scheme | UTM

Department of Quantity Surveying successfully hosted the 3rd Programme for QS Registration Scheme (PQRS 3.0) held at Grand Banquet Hall, Residensi UTMKL, Kuala Lumpur. The event was held on 24th October 2017 with theme focuses on ‘Why Am I a QS?’.

Co-organized with Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia, Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia, Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia, this event provides a platform for QS graduates to catalyze the journey of young QS in becoming registered QS in the near future as well as to be part of the professional cluster agenda. This event was graced by Yang Berbahagia Dato Sr Aziz bin Abdullah, president of the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia and keynote speech was delivered by Yang Berbahagia Dato Sr K Sri Kandan, Chairman of AECOM (M).

Four prominent speakers were invited to address the issues of the QS today and the way forward to embark ideas for future betterment of the profession. The first session presentation was delivered by Sr Dr Noushad Ali Naseem sharing his personal experience on becoming a professional QS and further urge young QS to gain the professional tittle by 2020 while Dr Suraya Ismail delivers on the policies and governance related to Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) from the Property and Construction Perspective. The second session aimed to inform young QS on option routes to become a professional. Sr Hj Nik Zainal Alam Hasan delivers on new ‘QS Technologies’ route, extending more options for QS to become professionals while Sr Mohamad Shazali bin Sulaiman addresses on the milestone to achieve through the journey becoming a professional QS. A mock interview session was coordinated by experienced surveyors found to be very engaging yet informative for young QS.

Attended by 500 quantity surveyors across Malaysia, this program launched the Mentor-Mentee Programme & Meet Your Mentor Sessions as a CSR initiative by the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia to guide provisional QS to become a professional QS.

The event’s closing remarks was officiated by Sr Mohamad Shazali bin Sulaiman, Head of PQRS 3.0 committee congratulating the host for the success of PQRS 3.0.

Dr. Tan Yean Chin, President of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) on being conferred the Best Student Award for Engineering Doctorate (Technology and Construction Management) at the UTM 59th Convocation Ceremony.  He has completed his thesis entitled  Performance of Floating Piled Raft with Varying Lengths in Solving Compressible Subsoil  under the supervision of Professor Ir. Dr. Ramli bin Nazir from Faculty of Civil Engineering.

Ir. Dr Tan Yean Chin is the President of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and Board member of the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM). Ir. Dr Tan also holds the position of Secretary General of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP), an independent umbrella organisation for the engineering institutions in the Asia and the Pacific region.

Ir. Dr. Tan obtained his B.Eng. (Civil) degree with First Class Honours from  Universiti  Teknologi  Malaysia  (UTM)  in  1992. In 1994, he was awarded the Chin Fung Kee prize and M.Eng. (Geotechnical Engineering) from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok. He later obtained his Engineering Doctorate from UTM in 2017.

Ir. Dr. Tan is a Professional Engineer and an Accredited Checker (Geotechnical) registered with the BEM. A registered ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE) as well as in the APEC  and International Professional Engineers registers. Ir. Dr. Tan is also an Honorary Fellow of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO), Fellow of IEM, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE, UK), ASEAN Academy of Engineering & Technology (AAET) and Academy of Engineering and Technology of the Developing World (AETDEW).

He is one of the Founder and Senior Director of G&P Professionals group of multi disciplines engineering consulting firms with staff strength of more than 300. He has lead his team in geotechnical design of mega projects such as Electrified Double Track Railway project (200km) from around Taiping to Alor Setar, Klang Valley MRT Line 1(SBK Line) and Klang Valley MRT Line 2 (SSP Line). Ir. Dr Tan has published more than 70 technical papers on geotechnical engineering in local and overseas conferences and seminars.
