Talk by Dr. Rozzeta Dolah at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA on Variation Measurement and Improvement in Industry/ Engineering Application | UTM NewsHub
On 17 October 2017, Dr. Rozzeta Dolah was invited to present a talk at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA on “Variation Measurement and Improvement in Industry/ Engineering Application”. The talk is attended by MIT professors, undergraduate and graduate students from engineering faculty. As there is a very little guidance for the practitioners/ engineers to select an appropriate strategy of robust measurement systems – What, When & Where to use Taguchi method versus other experimental design method of eliminating noise and variations, the talk has provided a solid underpinning of Taguchi method in controlling variation for measurement system. This is crucial to determine the degree of optimization, resolution required, time and costs constraints, nature of the problem, and robustness approach for a given problem in a process. The talk covered the wide spectrum of robust quality engineering such as essential parameters in data analysis, control of variation in measurement process, controlling defects through six sigma methodology and variation elimination. These elements undoubtedly provide the guidelines of what a robust measurement system should be in ensuring the measurement to represent the measurand. Therefore, the gap between theoretical uncertainty engineering and the measurement in real practice is reduced. Measurement errors, difficulties in determining the noise parameters, and confusion between the appropriate strategy to use are among the questions arised from the audience.
Profile:
Dr. Rozzeta Dolah is a senior lecturer at UTM Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She is currently pursuing her post doctoral at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, USA in Mechanical Engineering department under Microfluidics and Nanofluidics Research laboratory. Her research interest involves renewable energy in biomass conversion and nanotechnology transport phenomena using robust quality engineering including Taguchi method optimization. She is a Chartered Engineer registered in UK, with Ph.D specialized in quality engineering from Meiji University, Japan. Her experience in quality engineering was gained under the direct tutelage of the pioneer of Taguchi method, son of the late Dr. Taguchi. Prior to being in academic field, she has many years of experience as process engineer in industry, where she involved in multiple Black Belt Six Sigma projects, and solved problems through defects and variation elimination using MINITAB. As a member of Japan’s Quality Engineering Society, she led many quality improvement projects through the implementation of Taguchi Method (Robust Quality Engineering), Design of Experiments (DOE), and Lean Six Sigma.
The QS Asia University Rankings: UTM improves its performance | UTM NewsHub
The QS Asia University Rankings was launched with the aim of highlighting the top universities in Asia, shining a spotlight on the rapid development of many higher education systems in this dynamic world region. The methodology is adapted from that used for the QS World University Ranking, such as Academic Reputation; Employer Reputation; and Faculty to Student Ratio, but also considers a set of performance metrics carefully tailored for the region.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia improved its performance and leaped 14 places to #49 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2018. Considering there are approximately 11,900 universities regionally*, this makes UTM one of the top 1.0% universities in Asia.
Based on the performance indicators assessed, and at #19 the Faculty Student indicator is the strongest one for UTM. Additionally, UTM also performed well in the International Student indicator. This significant performance is largely attributed to the strong commitment by UTM faculty members to provide the best support in facilitating students’ learning experience, while harnessing potential talents among students to strive for excellence.
UTM is also set to engage in more impactful research collaborations that can ultimately lead to improved performance through joint publications and increased citations. At the same time, UTM will continue its efforts in enhancing research collaborations with partners across the globe especially in areas of mutual interests. This would help UTM researchers to leap forward and stay relevant and visible among peers at the global level.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that although rankings are useful for benchmarking, they should neither be viewed as the only measure of excellence, nor should they dictate how a university should move forward.
What is more important is to focus on the fundamentals of quality education, enhancing academic and research capacity and instilling a strong mindset and culture for improved reputation at the global level. This is what UTM will continue to strive for to reach greater heights.

UTM, Leading the Path in Smart Energy Monitoring
UTM has in the past used manual reading energy meter which requires huge manpower to collect the data onsite every month (considering the huge space area and the large number of buildings in UTM). Data which are keyed in manually, are prone to error and mistakes. Data obtained were also not real time, and problems can only be detected after 1 month.
eSMART, an online energy monitoring and management system has been developed by a UTM spin-off company, Optimal Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd, to enable UTM energy managers and top management to monitor and manage energy real time, anywhere. It received RM350k funding under the High Impact Programme (HIP) from Platcom Ventures.
UTM recently installed 48 eSMART meters on its campus ground to smartly monitor the energy usage of its offices, faculties and hostels, making it the first university that leads on Energy Management showcase by promoting industrial revolution and internet of things technologies.
Since the installation of the eSMART system, UTM has reduced the need to employ workers to collect energy data onsite. Data analysis and action are also done at a faster speed. Complaints on wrong energy data being keyed in have also been eliminated.
The online smart energy meter can be used by any organisation to monitor and manage their energy real time. In addition, the system is connected to a data analysis system which can aid energy managers to analyse their system and simulateously manage their ISO50001 and AEMAS Energy Management Gold Standard certification documentation.
UTM is the first organisation certified with AEMAS Energy Management Gold Standard 3 Star Certification and has also won the ASEAN Energy Award in 2012.
Apart from that, eSMART has been implemented at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Institut Perubatan Respiratori.
