UTM-LCARC Exhibits and Promotes Malaysia’s “Science to Action” (S2A) Approach to City-level Climate Change Action Plan-making at COP 23 | UTM

Bonn, Germany, 12th November – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), through the UTM-Low Carbon Asia Research Centre (UTM-LCARC) that is based in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment, organises an exhibition and participates in side events at the 23rd Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany, 6-17 November 2017.

Prof. TPr. Dr. Ho Chin Siong and TPr. Chau Loon Wai from the Department of Urban Regional Planning lead UTM’s participation at COP 23, which is presided by the island nation of Fiji and hosted by the German Government.  The exhibition marks UTM’s seventh installation at the COP since participating in COP 17 in Durban, South Africa in 2011.  UTM remains the only Malaysian university with an accredited Observer institution status at the COP.

The exhibition showcases UTM-LCARC’s latest work on advancing city-level climate change action plan-making (science to policy-making through multiple stakeholder engagements) and implementation (real actions on the ground) in Iskandar Malaysia, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Pengerang.

The successful “Science to Action” (S2A) approach used in climate change mitigation at the city-level impresses visitors of diverse professional backgrounds (ranging from senior government officials, politicians, industrialists, scientists engineers, architects and academicians to activists, NGO volunteers and university students) from over 30 countries in South America, Africa, Europe, the Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia, with many indicating interests in future collaboration.

UTM-LCARC also contributes to side events at the Japan Pavilion (as speakers and panellists) and Malaysia Pavilion (as speakers and poster exhibitor).

Recognition given to UTM Prof. Dr. Khairiyah, A Champion in Engineering Education| UTM

Congratulations to Prof Dr Khairiyah Mohd Yusof as the recipient of the Student Platform in Engineering Education Development (SPEED) Mentorship Award, by the SPEED executive committee and SPEED Global Student Forum (GSF) organizing committee in partnership with Dassault Systemes at the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF 2017) held on Monday, 13 November 2017. The award is presented to Prof Dr. Khairiyah Mohd Yusof who has proven to be a mentor for students all over the world where her voice and ideas are implemented to affect change in engineering education.

In the award letter to Prof Dr. Khairiyah Mohd Yusof, it was cited that:

Prof Dr Khairiyah Mohd Yusof is very patient as she mentors her students to push their own limits of achievement. She teaches her students to be more independent in making decisions, building skills and gaining knowledge.

Her innovation in teaching and learning via Cooperative Problem-Based Learning has positively impacted students’ problem-solving assets and developing more constructive skills. With appropriate scaffolding such as motivation, encouragement, and facilitation, she helps her students to construct new engineering knowledge and also coaches them to refine the skills they already have.

In addition to the years of work she has put in developing students in engineering education, her mentorship towards members of SPEED (local and international) and the organization of the Global Student Forum 2017 is truly instrumental in organizing an intentional and well-thought-out event.

UTM is proud with the recognition received by Prof Dr. Khairiyah Mohd Yusof, for all the works that she has done in mentoring the students.

Sharing interesting stories on acts of kindness in the spirit of giving to UTM.
1. Through salary deductions ranging from RM1 to RM5, 164 staff of UTM are making monthly contributions to the UTM Endowment Fund. It is an amazing sacrifice to UTM, no matter how small the contribution may be. It is not the amount that matters but their sincere ‘act of kindness’ is making a difference to the lives of students in UTM who are in need. A reflection of a true UTM DNA. Something to be proud of! Alhamdulillah.

2. Yesterday morning, as a last minute effort, a simple whatsap was sent to one of the top corporate figures I know. Amazingly, the simple message touched the heart of the corporate figure, ending in a RM 100k donation to UTM Endowment (of course t’ru the company CSR fund). Alhamdulillah. A noble gift indeed!

Two different stories in terms of monetary value but both are noble acts of kindness and a remarkable spirit of giving to make a difference. May Allah accept their kindness with the best rewards, insyaallah

We will not stop this fundraising drive. It will continue beyond Royal Gala Dinner, and anyone can contribute, at any time with any amount. Thank you all
