The special status was based on Jerusalem&#8217;s religious importance to the three Abrahamic religions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\nIn the 1948 war, following the UN&#8217;s recommendation to divide\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/palestine.html\">Palestine<\/a>, Zionist forces took control of the western half of the city and declared the territory part of its state.<\/p>\n<p>During the 1967 war, Israel captured the eastern half of Jerusalem, which was under Jordanian control at the time, and proceeded to effectively annex it by extending Israeli law, bringing it directly under its jurisdiction, in breach of international law.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980, Israel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knesset.gov.il\/laws\/special\/eng\/basic10_eng.htm\">passed<\/a>\u00a0the &#8220;Jerusalem Law&#8221;, stating that &#8220;Jerusalem, complete and united, is the capital of Israel&#8221;, thereby formalising its annexation of East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In response, the UN Security Council passed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/DPA\/DPR\/unispal.nsf\/0\/DDE590C6FF232007852560DF0065FDDB\">Resolution 478<\/a>\u00a0in 1980, declaring the law &#8220;null and void&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The international community, including the US, officially regards<b><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/b>East Jerusalem as occupied territory. Additionally, no country in the world recognises any part of Jerusalem as Israel&#8217;s capital, with the exception of Russia, which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mid.ru\/en\/foreign_policy\/news\/-\/asset_publisher\/cKNonkJE02Bw\/content\/id\/2717182\">announced<\/a>\u00a0its recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>As of now, all embassies are based in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, on Wednesday, December 6, US President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/12\/trump-call-jerusalem-israel-capital-move-embassy-171205175049389.html\">expected to announce<\/a>\u00a0US recognition of\u00a0Jerusalem\u00a0as Israel&#8217;s capital and direct the state department to begin the lengthy process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the city, according to senior White House officials.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alhaq.org\/advocacy\/topics\/wall-and-jerusalem\/144-40-years-after-the-unlawful-annexation-of-east-jerusalem-consolidation-of-the-illegal-situation-continues-through-the-construction-of-the-jerusalem-light-rail\">illegal Israeli\u00a0annexation<\/a>\u00a0of East Jerusalem\u00a0violates several principles under international law,\u00a0which outlines that an occupying power\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrc.org\/eng\/resources\/documents\/misc\/634kfc.htm\">does not have sovereignty<\/a>\u00a0in the territory it occupies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\nToday, some\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcbs.gov.ps\/site\/512\/default.aspx?tabID=512&amp;lang=en&amp;ItemID=1661&amp;mid=3172&amp;wversion=Staging\">420,000 Palestinians<\/a>\u00a0in East Jerusalem have &#8220;permanent residency&#8221; ID cards. They also carry temporary Jordanian passports without a national identification number. This means that they are not full Jordanian citizens &#8211; they need a work permit to work in Jordan and do not have access to governmental services and benefits such as reduced education fees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Palestinian Jerusalemites are essentially stateless, stuck in legal limbo &#8211; they are not citizens of Israel, nor are they citizens of Jordan or Palestine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Israel treats Palestinians in East Jerusalem as foreign immigrants who live there as a favour granted to them by the state and not by right, despite having been born there. They are required to fulfil a certain set of requirements to maintain their residency status and live in constant fear of having their residency revoked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any Palestinian who has lived outside the boundaries of Jerusalem for a certain period of time, whether in a foreign country or even in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/occupied-west-bank.html\">West Bank<\/a>, is at risk of losing their right to live there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Those who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.palestine-studies.org\/jq\/fulltext\/78495\">cannot prove<\/a>\u00a0that the &#8220;centre of their life&#8221; is in Jerusalem and that they have lived there continuously, lose their right to live in their city of birth. They must submit dozens of documents including title deeds, rent contracts and salary slips.\u00a0Obtaining citizenship from another country also leads to the revocation of their status.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the meantime, any Jew around the world enjoys the right to live in Israel and to obtain Israeli citizenship under Israel&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfa.gov.il\/mfa\/mfa-archive\/1950-1959\/pages\/law%20of%20return%205710-1950.aspx\">\u00a0Law of Return<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 1967, Israel has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.btselem.org\/jerusalem\/revocation_of_residency\">revoked the status<\/a>\u00a0of 14,000 Palestinians, according to Israeli rights group B\u2019Tselem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Israel&#8217;s settlement project in East Jerusalem, which is aimed at the consolidation of Israel&#8217;s control over the city, is also considered illegal under international law.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">UN<\/a>\u00a0has affirmed in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/webcast\/pdfs\/SRES2334-2016.pdf\">several resolutions<\/a>\u00a0that the settlement project is in direct contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits an occupying country from transferring its population into the areas it occupies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are several reasons behind this: to ensure that the occupation is temporary and to prevent the occupying state from establishing a long-term presence through military rule; to protect the occupied civilians from the theft of resources; to prevent apartheid and changes in the demographic makeup of the territory.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, since 1967, Israel has built more than a dozen housing complexes for Jewish Israelis, known as settlements, some in the midst of Palestinian neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>About 200,000 Israeli citizens live in East Jerusalem under army and police protection, with the largest single settlement complex housing 44,000 Israelis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Such fortified settlements, often scattered between Palestinians&#8217; homes, infringe on the freedom of movement, privacy and security of Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though Israel claims Jerusalem as its undivided capital, the realities for those who live there cannot be more different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">While Palestinians live under apartheid-like conditions, Israelis enjoy a sense of normality, guaranteed for them by their state.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/05\/jerusalem-capital-israel-170524091310050.html\">Why Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel | East Jerusalem | Al Jazeera<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No country in the world recognises Jerusalem as Israel&#8217;s capital.
