Seven Turkish soldiers have been killed in an offensive against Kurdish militia in\u00a0Syria<\/a>, including five who died in a single attack on a tank, Turkey\u2019s army has said.<\/p>\n

The losses marked the highest toll in one day for the Turkish military in\u00a0Operation Olive Branch<\/a>, launched on 20 January against the Syrian Kurdish\u00a0People\u2019s Protection Units<\/a>\u00a0(YPG) militia, seen by Ankara as a terrorist group.<\/p>\n

The assault on the tank on Saturday, details of which were not disclosed, was also the single deadliest attack on the Turkish military of the offensive so far.<\/p>\n

Turkey\u2019s president,\u00a0Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan<\/a>, said on Thursday the Turkish army and Ankara-backed rebels had recorded 25 deaths between them.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, seven civilians have been killed in mortar fire on the Turkish side of the border, with Ankara blaming the YPG.<\/p>\n

Ankara says major progress has been made in the 15-day operation, with almost 900 YPG fighters killed so far, although it is not possible to verify these figures.<\/p>\n

Erdo\u011fan tried to reassure the French president, Emmanuel Macron, on Saturday, telling the French leader the push was aimed against \u201cterror elements\u201d and that Ankara had no eye on Syrian territory.<\/p>\n

Macron had incensed Turkish officials by saying in a newspaper interview last week that France would have a \u201creal problem\u201d with the campaign if it turned out to be an \u201cinvasion operation\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the phone call, \u201cthe two presidents agreed to work on a diplomatic roadmap in Syria in the coming weeks\u201d, the \u00c9lys\u00e9e Palace said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
