I was born in a remote village called Kampung Serkat, Pontian, Johor, Malaysia. It is a village very near Tanjung Piai, the most southern tip of Asia which is now known for its tourist’s destination. I had my early education at Serkat Primary English school. I still remember my late dad, who was a teacher at another primary school with my late mom, always bought for me story books and magazines. Here was when my first experience of publishing an article in a national magazine for known as ‘Utusan Pelajar”. I wrote a story in a column on how my village got its name. I obtained the facts from my late father, of course, little of I knew what I would become in my life. He had always encouraged me to become a lecturer. In the will of Allah, his wish has become true.
I was offered to continue my secondary education at Tunku Kurshiah College in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. This is a prestigious residential school, where I acquired some of my life’s skill here. I had to be independent in managing my time where there were strict and stringent regulations that I had to follow. I made many good friends here from all over Malaysia and from various family backgrounds.
After finishing the Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE), I was then offered to continue my education in the United Kingdom (UK) for five years, where then I obtained my first degree. I was very lucky to be offered as an assistant lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia(UTM), Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur. I have been at this university ever since. I have grown to love this work-place, which is like my second home to me.
Later this UTM main campus was transferred to Skudai, Johor and I have resided in Skudai since then. I did my master’s degree at Physics Department, Faculty of Science, UTM. I finished my Ph.D. here too, but my first year was done at Keele’s University, UK. I transferred the technology of a gas sensing system to be installed at my department.
I know many people thought I would be from the state of Terengganu because of my name. Actually, I am the fifth generation born in Johor, where my ancestor was from Kuala Terengganu.
