His Teaching Responsibilities start at the UTM as a Tutor, he focuses in teaching related to civil engineering courses such as Tutorial, Survey Engineering (Field), Technical Drawing and Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory. Then starting 2007, the past accumulated knowledge is very useful towards the teaching of a postgraduate (PG) level such as Fluvial Hydraulics (MAB 5033) and Environmental Hydraulics (MAB 5303). Meanwhile, two main core courses related to hydraulics that includes Fluid Mechanics (SAB 1513) and Hydraulics (SAB 2513/SKAA 2513/SKAB 2513), have been taught at Undergraduate (UG) level. He also involved in teaching several related civil engineering courses such as Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory (SAB 2012), Professional Design Practice (PAP) (SAB 4012), Civil Engineering Seminar (SEMKA) (SAB 4021), Integrated Design Project 3 (IDP 3) (SKAA 4042), Pre Project (SAA 4032/SAB 4032/SKAA 4032/SKAB 4032) and Final Year Project (SAA 4064/SAB 4064/SKAA 4064/SKAB 4064). The complete list of the courses (1998-2020) is provided in Appendix I including both PG and UG levels.
In term of Teaching Philosophy, he believed that to be an effective lecturer, one factor is must be passionate about teaching. Someone with a passion for teaching will creatively craft messages and activities that work for their students. In order to achieve that, he need to apply most of the Bloom’s Taxonomy cognitive domain in teaching gradually from recognizing to evaluating, in accordance with the student’s level of thinking, skill and attitude. As an engineering lecturer, one must also be understanding and caring to show that they are loving the profession. To avoid boredom in class, he will make sure that his teaching as interesting as possible by involving his student in the class. This is because teaching activities are not just make the lesson fun but also helps the student in their understanding. Therefore, he will make sure his teaching aid always attractive and appropriate with the content of the lesson. He also believed that, one person’s experience would always turn to be his greatest lecturer.
In Teaching Methodology, when he apply this to teaching, he is always emphasize on the importance of experiential, theoretical and experimental approach. This can be done by at the beginning on his lesson by letting the students know what are expected of them and what the learning outcomes of his lecture instead of each course has their Course Information (CI). He make sure his lesson to be as active as possible, so that the students not just can understand well but willing to construct their own knowledge and understanding of the course. Two approaches that he always applies which always aligned to New Academia Learning Innovation initiatives and university requirements are constructive learning and cooperative learning. Cooperative learning plays an important role in formal and in-formal education. This is due to the need for more collaborative learning for activities performed in groups whether in a classroom and outside. One main reason for such valuable method is towards deep interaction, particularly for students with heterogeneous knowledge and skills.
Teaching Assessment is very important in order whether his student really understand or not. Of course all assessment that needs to follow all have been documents in Course Information (CI). His students are continuously assessed throughout the semester through Test, Examination and Assignment. For example in Hydraulics Course (SAA 2513/SAB 2513/SKAA 2513/SKAB 2513), two tests will be given. The first test is usually given at week 7 and the 2nd test at week 13 with the total mark of 30%. To ensure the questions have different level of difficulties, he will focus level of Bloom’s Taxonomy for test and higher level for the examination. The examination is a comprehensive evaluation of course, which covers all material from week 1 to week 14. Examination takes 50% of the total final examination marks. Next, the complex problem assignments will be given to his student call case study, which are the group activities. The aims of this case study are to develop qualities of initiative and responsibility among the students. Students may also acquire good team working, communication, leadership and problem solving skills through this work. This assessment will be carried out based on the project report is 20%.
He also has carried out several Efforts to Improve Teaching by attending seminar, conferences, workshops and courses that related to teaching and learning. Based on the online Teaching Evaluation UTM e-PPP system, his students have given positive rating and feedback towards his teaching that can be seen in Appendix II. Regarding the supervision responsibility, Zulhilmi supervised more than 100 UG Final Year Projects (FYP-successfully completed) and currently supervise PG and UG levels including: 15 PhD students (8 graduated), 14 Master students (13 graduated) by research/taught course and 10 UG Pre Project/Final Year Project as list in Appendix III. Lastly, Zulhilmi also have received several Honors and Recognition since 2008 including two Excellent Service Awards during Citra Karisma at UTM level in 2011 and 2015 as listed in Appendix IV.
