Self Introduction
I received the B.E. degree in Electrical and Computer Systems from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, in 1989, the M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electromagnetic Engineering with Industrial Applications from the University of Wales Cardiff, Cardiff, U.K., in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree in High Voltage Engineering from Cardiff University, Cardiff, U.K., in 1999. I have been with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for 30 years, and I am currently a Professor of High Voltage Engineering with the School of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. I am currently the Director of the Institute of High Voltage and High Current (IVAT), UTM.
I have published two books, and have authored and co-authored more than 150 papers in various technical journals and conference proceedings. My research interests include high-voltage instrumentation, lightning protection, detection and warning systems, partial discharges, nanodielectrics, and condition monitoring of power equipment.
I hold 2 patents, and had won numerous awards at national and international level exhibitions. A total of 20 PhD and 5 Master students had graduated under my supervision. I had delivered several invited and keynote speeches in his areas of expertise (surge arrester intelligent condition monitoring, lightning related EMC, warning system, and LPS) nationally and internationally. I had also carried out several consultancy work for the industries and had also led many research grants with an accumulated grant total of RM1.6M. Among the consultancy projects I have led are with TNB Research (HVTL mentoring, 2008), TNB Research (on cable joints tests, 2011), Petronas (on grounding grid design, 2018), Petronas (on cold vent stack fire ignition, 2019) and TNB Research (GIS byproduct gas analyses, 2019).
I am actively involved in many international and national committees. I am a member of MT 03 IEC 60060-2 High voltage test techniques – Part 2: Measuring systems, and a co-opted member of ACED Committee. I am the Chairman for ICPADM 2021 Organising Committee, Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVNet) (2015-2016) and Malaysian Working Group on High-Voltage and High-Current Test Techniques. I am also a member of Malaysian IEC Certification Body Management Committee, Malaysian Technical Committee on High Voltage Power Transmission, and Department of Standards IEC 17025 Technical Assessors. I am a Senior Member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) and IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS), and also a member of IET.
