Description

The book Akhlak: Self-Identity, Life, and the Environment is written to provide insight and understanding to Muslims in particular, and to humanity in general, about the comprehensiveness and importance of akhlak (morality) in Islamic teachings. This is deemed crucial as moral values among Muslims today are increasingly eroded in various aspects. Issues such as abuse of power, corruption, arrogance, pride, envy, self-righteousness, and belittling others have become rampant in society and the nation. This alarming situation has become a frequent topic of discussion in mass media, whether electronic or print media.

This book explores questions related to akhlak, including a conceptual overview, the differences between the terms akhlak and ethics, the sources of akhlak, and the various domains of Islamic morality as well as the unique characteristics of Islamic moral values. It also discusses the Qur’anic methodology (manhaj al-Qur’an) in shaping commendable character. Furthermore, the book touches on the role of morality in managing mental and physical intelligence. The role of akhlak within family life, an important aspect of individual and societal wellbeing in a country, is also addressed. Discussions on practices related to physical and spiritual cleanliness, as part of the noble demands of Islamic morality, are also included.

This book is suitable for students as well as general readers and those interested in exploring the concept of tasawwuf (Islamic mysticism) with a balanced (wasatiyyah) approach. It is hoped that this book will contribute valuable insights and understanding for readers on the significance of akhlak and its extensive role in Islam, encouraging readers to appreciate and practice these values in their daily lives. The rising number of divorce cases in Malaysia each year is a worrying trend, with an extraordinary increase involving both non-Muslim and Muslim couples. According to the National Registration Department (NRD), there were 1,749 cases recorded in 2017, which rose to 2,016 cases in 2018. For Muslim couples, the Director-General of the Malaysian Syariah Judiciary Department (JKSM), Datuk Dr. Mohd Naim Mokhtar, reported that the highest number of divorces among Muslim couples nationwide last year occurred in developed states such as Selangor and Johor. Out of the total 45,420 divorce cases registered nationwide in 2021, Selangor recorded 8,811 cases, followed by Johor with 5,058 cases, Perak with 4,215 cases, and Kelantan with 4,093 cases. The main causes identified include lack of understanding between partners, financial problems, failure to fulfill the responsibility of providing maintenance (nafkah), infidelity, and family interference.

In response to this, the effort to raise awareness and provide exposure is encapsulated in this book as an initiative to address divorce issues while enhancing family quality. It aims to strengthen the role and responsibility of the family institution systematically through social, economic, spiritual, and conflict management aspects. Furthermore, it supports the formation of a harmonious and prosperous society that upholds inter-ethnic unity by addressing critical needs to ensure the stability of the family institution. Collaborative efforts from various parties are essential to ensure that a well-functioning family unit is built from its very foundation. This will help reduce the challenges in achieving well-being in life, as every individual becomes aware of their responsibilities towards each other and, ultimately, towards the Creator.
