‘Before I die …’ is a new project done by public installation artist and urban designer, Candy Chang located in New Orleans. This lively interactive street art, was a large chalkboard installed on a long-abandoned house, after Chang receiving permission from the property owner, the neighbourhood association and a plenty of other authorities. A small baskets of coloured chalk were attached, so that passers-by could scribble their wishes and personal desires.
A simple question – What do you want to do before you die? – inspired and attracted passers-by to reflect momentarily on their own mortality and what they hope to achieve in the short time they have on the planet. By asking residents to share a little piece of themselves, this project brought a neighbourhood and the entire city closer together. Chang has plans to take this to other cities, in order to return some usefulness to abandoned places and encourage people to get involved.
