New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI) 2018 Symposium

JOHOR BAHRU, 28 MAY 2018 – The UTM Academic Leadership Center (UTMLead) with Faculty of Education organized New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI) 2018 Symposium to further promote best practices and sharing of New Academia Learning Innovation implementation in higher education. It gathered 22 presenters including presenters from Indonesia and local teachers. There were also delegations from Sunway College Johor Bahru who attended the Symposium to participate. All the presented papers were published in online proceeding that can be downloaded from http://ctl.utm.my/nali2018.

New Academia Learning Innovation was first ideated and written in the book titled New Academia in 2012 to document UTM’s committment towards forming new thinking, philosophy, and higher education framework through new pedagogy that can nurture students to be competitive at international level. From this mindset, UTM set to develop the New Academia Learning Innovation, NALI Framework that proposed the integration of technologies in innovative teaching and learning methods. This is explained in detail in the book A Guide to New Academia Learning Innovation published in 2017.

NALI Symposium was a healthy discussion platform for academicians and teachers to exchange knowledge, practices and opinion on teaching and learning in higher education. NALI Symposium also marked the beginning of a series of NALI activities that will be held on 25th-26thSeptember 2018 which will include exhibition and competition and STEMazing Run and Race.

FGHT Future Career Advancement Property Series

Skudai, 20 April 2018 – Real Estate students at the Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate (FGHT), UTM were enlightened with invaluable tips and information in preparing themselves for a lifetime career advancement in the property industry from several biggest players as such Knight Frank Sdn. Bhd., City Valuers Sdn. Bhd., SGD Properties Sdn. Bhd., Rahim & Co Sdn. Bhd., Jones Lang Wotton Sdn. Bhd. and CBRE-WTW Sdn. Bhd. This FGHT Annual Program is known as the PropSeries 2018 which includes activities such as career talk and interview sessions.

PropSeries 2018 also witnessed for the first time the participation of Chamber International Singapore, the biggest property management company in Singapore.

Property students were presented with a glimpse of the fast pace day-to-day operations of these companies. They also were briefed on the knowledge and job skills that employers look for in their employees.

This University-Industry collaboration between Department of Real Estate and industry players benefits the students in preparing for the real-life working world. Due to the positive responses from all companies, students look forward to more similar workshops in the near future.

This annual program is under the initiative of Sr Dr Kamalahasan A/L Achu, Senior Lecturer, Department of Real Estate (FGHT),  who is also the Secretary of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RISM), Johor and other Real Estate academics.

Nurturing Transnational Education (TNE): 17 Graduated with Double Master’s Degree During UTM 60th Convocation Ceremony

Internationalization of higher education has become a priority for many universities and UTM essentially continues to expand its TNE activities through international academic and research collaborations with numerous established global universities.

Recently, during the UTM 60th Convocation held on 28 and 29 April 2018, 17 graduates were awarded with Double Master’s Degree; 11 graduands from UTM Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (UTM Razak School) with Meiji University, Japan and 6 graduands from Faculty of Bioscience and Medical Engineering (FBME) with Technical University Ilmenau (Germany).

The agreement between the Graduate School of Business Administration, Meiji University, Japan and UTM (UTM Razak School) was signed on June 23, 2010. The agreement is to hold a Double Master’s Program between the Graduate School of Business Administration, Meiji University of Japan and UTM Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology.  Under this program, the UTM students will be in Japan for 6 weeks. According to the agreement, students of the Master of Science (Engineering Business Management) (MEBM) program from UTM Razak School and students of the Master of Business Administrations (MBA) from Meiji University will be enrolled in the Double Master program. They will be awarded an MBA by Meiji University, Japan, along with MEBM by UTM respectively.

To date, 9 cohort of students of this program have graduated and some have been accepted to serve in USA, Japan, China and Vietnam. A total of 19 Meiji University students were awarded the MEBM degree while a total of 21 MEBM students were awarded an MBA degree by Meiji University, Japan.

Meanwhile, the Double Degree Program in Biomedical Engineering between UTM (FBME) and Technical University Ilmenau (TUIL), Germany has been started since 2011. The Doctorate Double Degree Program enables student to be awarded with two (2) certificates, which are Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering from UTM and Doctor in Computer science and automation (Dr-Ing) from TUIL. The students are required to spend at least nine (9) months at the partner university. Whereas, the Master Double Degree Program offers students to gain two (2) Master degrees, which are Master of Philosophy (Biomedical) from UTM and Master of Science (Biomedical Engineering) from TUIL. The students are required to spend at least seven (7) months at the partner university. The awards from UTM and TUIL will boost up the core value of students’ achievement, research collaboration as well as recognition of UTM within the European region towards becoming World Class University. To date, UTM has graduated thirteen (13) students from Malaysia, Germany, China, Iran and Indonesia.

Food Carnival 2018 to Fulfill UTM Elective Subject

JOHOR BAHRU, 24 April 2018 – The Bioprocess Engineering Student Society (BIOSS) of the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering (FCEE) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) had organized the 2018 BIOSS Entrepreneurial Food Carnival.

The carnival was held in order to fulfill the requirement of the elective subject of Entrepreneurial (UHAS 3012) which is required to be taken by all UTM final year students.

Program Director, Zulhilmi Ahmad Samsudin said that besides following the UTM academic regulation, this project was also organized to instill the entrepreneurial spirits among university future graduates.

“For this activity, 36 final year students of Bioprocess Engineering were divided into seven groups. One group was in charge of organizing the event while another six were required to set up stalls selling the food.

“Among the items sold were sweet corn, spicy fried chicken sausage and other light food and soft drinks,” said Zulhilmi.
Zulhilmi mentioned that upon completion of the sale, each group was required to conduct a presentation detailing of each sale and profit obtained to the appraisal panel for the distribution of marks.

Commenting on the subjects introduced by UTM to his students, Zuhilmi personally supported the matter.

“The introduction to this subject is good for future graduates to create their own jobs through business.

“In addition to instilling entrepreneurial traits among graduates, this subject contributes in harnessing the soft skills of the graduates such as speaking skills, creative thinking as well as managing skills of an organization,” he continued.

Outstanding Researcher In Coastal Satellite Altimetry From National Research Council In Pisa Italy Visited FGHT

Skudai, 24 March 2018- Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate (FGHT), UTM Johor Bahru, received an academic visit from an expert from National Research Council in Pisa, Italy, Dr. Stefano Vignudelli.

His arrival was warmly welcomed by the dean of faculty, Prof. Sr Dr. Mohd Razali Mahmud, Head of TropicalMap Research Group, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kasturi Dewi Kanniah, Director of Geospatial and Digital Earth Centre of Excellent, Sr Dr. Mohd Nadzri Md Reba, and experts in Coastal Altimetry, Sr Dr. Nurul Hazrina Idris.

The purpose of the visit was to introduce the new technology of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in satellite altimetry for coastal applications. His visit was a part of the European Space Agency (ESA) initiative to pursue research collaboration with ASEAN countries.

Dr. Stefano spent a week in FGHT from 18-24 March 2018. During the visit, he delivered two (2) public talks on the topic of Space Oceanography and Coastal Altimetry to the researchers and students. He also conducted a free hands-on workshop on SAR Altimetry for Coastal Applications, which was attended by 30 participants.

The dean and all faculty members would like to thank Dr. Stefano Vignudelli for his visit to FGHT and hope the visit will open the door of collaborations among FGHT, National Research Council of Italy, and ESA.

FKE students from UTM awarded the First Runner-Up position in “The Malaya Makerthon 2018” at Universiti Malaya

Two groups of FKE students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia joined “The Malaya Makerthon 2018” at Universiti Malaya from 5th April to 7th April of 2018. One of those groups, namely “The Half-Baked Ice Cubes”, consisting of 3 Mechatronics Engineering students from FKE successfully managed to achieve the 1st Runner-Up position in the competition. The Team members are Azwad Abid, Labib Sharrar and Muhammad Aiman Bin Adam Lim. They were awarded a prize money of RM1500 and will get the opportunity to go straight into ASEAN Makerthon 2018, organized by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Cyberjaya.
