UTM Culture Corner 18.0

UTM Culture Corner 18.0 | 23 November 2018 (Friday) | 7:00 am – 9:00 pm |
Mini Malaysia Malacca and ASEAN Cultural Park & the Historical City of Malacca
Theme :- Trip to Malacca

This was the first Culture Corner for the semester that gave students the opportunity to experience Malaysia outside Johor and the campus grounds. Culture Corner 18.0 with the theme ‘Trip to Malacca’ aimed to inculcate new and interesting Malaysian culture and knowledge to the students. The trip started off in the morning by heading to Mini Malaysia Malacca and ASEAN Cultural Park. The students were allowed to freely stroll around the cultural park that showcased replicas of the 13 traditional Malaysian and ASEAN homes. A traditional dance performance courtesy of the Mini Malaysia Malacca and ASEAN Cultural Park was also presented to the students to showcase the cultural diversity in Malaysia.

After an eventful morning at Mini Malaysia and after Friday prayer, the students were dropped off opposite to The Taming Sari Tower and they were given some refreshments such as the Malacca famous Coconut Shake as well as the renowned ‘Kuih Keria Antarabangsa’ before they headed off to explore the city of Malacca independently. Students were allowed to roam the city for a good 7 hours! Famous historical sights and museums such as the A’Famosa Fort, Maritime Museum, the Stadthuys were among some of the famous places they visited in Malacca. As the day turned dark, it was an opportunity to enjoy the bustling environment of Jonker Street that was no short of excitement and constantly selling various types of goods such as souvenirs, clothes, bags, shoes and of course, FOOD! A large variety of affordable local delicacies can be found at Jonker Street to suite ones taste and preference. Some food can only be found in Malacca and not anywhere else in Malaysia.

After a long day of enjoying oneself with friends and acquiring new knowledge, it was time to say goodbye to the Historical City of Malacca. We sincerely hope that the students will be able to remember the bonds formed and the experiences gained throughout this event and will keep on cherishing the memories that they have created with one another.

It is our hope that the friendships, networks and bonds built throughout Culture Corner will persistently last. It is also our heartfelt expectation that the students have gained immensely during the interactions and sharing. It’s Full of The Joys of Spring for the Excellent Post Graduate Students!

JOHOR BAHRU , 9 Nov. – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) post graduate students whom excel in their studies have been celebrated in a grand event in Pulai Springs, here today.

112 excellent students were selected from amongst the most outstanding postgraduate students in their field of study and faculty/schools from Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur campus, where 36 were Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students and 76 were from Master program.

Faculty of Engineering has the most numbers of recipients with 11 PhD and 34 Master recipients.

The event, called Best Post Graduate Students Award, is organized by the School of Graduate Studies (SPS) and it is held every UTM convocation session for each semester.

For the best student of Doctor of Philosophy, Chemical Engineering program, Siti Khadijah binti Hubadillah, learning is like an unrequited love because you need to learn wholeheartedly and never expect anything in return.

“Throughout my studies, I deactivated all my social media,” she said.

Now appointed as an additional research advisor at Nan Yang Academy Singapore, her research focuses on water purification because the world only has three percent of clean water, since another 97% is sea water.

“However, because of the industrial activities, clean water is left with one percent. So my focus of the investigation is to clear water.

The latest project is not to depend on neighbouring countries for clean water,” she added.

She graduated her doctoral program with B1 result in VIVA (oral examination), seven Q1 papers, six Q2 papers and 6 scopus index.

Meanwhile for the best student in Doctor of Philosophy, Educational Technology program, Kew Si Na, she has a special interest to know more about how technology can be used greatly to enhance teaching and learning practices effectively, and this has led to the basis of her research, which is to focus on e-learning to improve learning process of students.

Throughout her three-year learning journey,  she has involved in many interesting activities like Three Minutes Thesis Competition, research exhibitions and competitions, young scholar program, research conferences, research internship in Thailand, international invitation program such as Hong Kong, Xi’an, Shenzhen and Maldives and university visit program in Indonesia.

These were her tips to excel in study:

  • To possess passion and curiosity in your research field. With that, you will feel more motivated to read and write more.
  • To develop the right attitude. The journey of PhD is challenging, and thus must always be determined, think positively, and never give up no matter how.
  • To manage time wisely and have a plan. With that, you will have clearer ideas on what to do and how long you will need to complete the tasks punctually.
  • To discuss with your supervisor. Come out with your own ideas and discuss with your supervisor. Don’t simply sit and wait for your supervisor to tell you what to do.
  • To have peer-to-peer support and be part of research group. Get your buddy whom you can share thoughts and feelings with. Research group will organize numerous skills development workshops and seminars.

Being a fast track student, she undergone many challenges in life, and one of the unforgettable moments was when she was lack of skills and knowledge in research methodology that she need to put extra efforts and spend much more time to study the related books and articles to cover back what she had lacked.

“I feel proud to be one of the UTM students,” she said, ending the conversation.

One of the other recipients, Dr. Liman Alhaji Saba from Nigeria, a Doctor of Philosophy Architecture student, studying in UTM has changed his lifestyle and he is satisfied with all the services and facilities in UTM.

“I will give a lot to UTM once I am back in my country, such as promoting good names of UTM. In fact, my daughter will come to Malaysia to enroll in UTM in the year 2020,” he added.

All these recipients will also be graduating in the UTM 61st Convocation Ceremony which will be held on 10 – 12 December 2018.

UTM wishes a very hearty congratulations to all graduands!

Being handicap not an obstacle to achieve success

JOHOR BAHRU, 10 November 2018 – Being a disabled person (OKU) is not an obstacle for a person to achieve success in any field of endeavor, as long as the person thinks positive.
An OKU Special Award recipient of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Lee Ke Vin, 27, said he has never regretted being born as a disabled and even regarded it as a positive challenge to achieve success.
“If you want to succeed, just go through with something that you desire without giving up despite what happened. Be a strong minded person who always think positive towards other things in this world”.
Lee graduated with a Master’s degree in Bioscience in the 61st UTM Convocation ceremony which was held from 10 to 12 November 2018 at Johor Bahru campus. He received his scroll together with the award from the Chancellor of UTM, Her Royal Highness Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah.
Being asked about the disabled facilities available at UTM, Lee said he was very satisfied with the existing facility as there are many facilities available to support the disabled in UTM.
Lee said for instance, the faculty provided him with a special chair in the classroom, while the library is also set up with special lanes to facilitate the disabled people’s mobility.
“Friends, classmates and lecturers have also been very supportive. I am very proud to be a student of UTM and will continue to be linked with UTM even after my graduation, “he said.
Lee also did not rule out UTM status as a Research University (RU) has helped him to succeed in his studies.
“The Research University status has actually helped me in my studies. As you know, the biological subjects I took entails that I spend time in the lab experimenting.
The RU status enables UTM to enjoy many facilities for research and laboratory grants, which has resulted in a vibrant teaching and learning environment,” he said.
Two years ago after graduating with his Bachelor of Bioscience from UTM, Lee worked in a ceramic company in Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru. He worked as an Assistant Engineer which has nothing to do with his field of studies.
“I have to work to enrich my experience and to lessen the burden of my family. Besides that, my working experience can also be used as a research material for my post-graduate studies,” he said.
