JOHOR BAHRU, 30 Sept. – UTM Centre of Sustainability (UTMCS) will organize a series of river cleaning programme in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) campus area known as “Riverdale Programme” in 2019 to spread the awareness to preserve river cleanliness among UTM community.

The Director of UTMCS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Fadhil Md. Din said, they will be running more small-but-high-impact sustainable programmes in the future with most of these activities will involve volunteers among students.

“So it is essential for us to regroup all student-volunteers starting from now to guarantee the success of this plan,” he added.

He said during a river cleaning that was held in collaboration between Kolej Rahman Putra (KRP) and UTMCS, today.

In the programme, organized in conjunction with World Rivers Day which is celebrated every September 30th, a group of 91 volunteers consisted of students and staffs of KRP were involved.

Stating that the programme was the initial activity to the Riverdale Program, Dr Fadhil said the main objective is to raise awareness among students who resided at KRP about the importance to preserve the river cleanliness besides helping the student-volunteers to have a better understanding about the ecosystem stability.

“The programme can also expose the students on how to clean the river without using the costly heavy machinery.” he said.
