CONFERENCE INTRODUCTION

The global challenges facing humanity today serve as a reminder of the finite nature and limitations of the planet Earth. Health and environmental crises manifest worldwide from the current COVID-19 pandemic to the increasingly felt impacts of climate change. These consequences of unsustainable consumption and production patterns threaten the socioeconomic gains in many countries and highlight the need for stronger cooperation and actions to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Belt and Road initiative (BRI) aims to promote the economic prosperity and cooperation of the Belt and Road (B&R) Countries for lasting peace and development. B&R Countries are mostly at the middle or low end of global value chains, typically associated with challenges like low resource efficiency, environmental pollution, and ecological degradation. Especially in the context of the current global climate governance and aspirations for carbon-neutrality, urgent actions fostering sustainable consumption and production are needed. The BRI presents an opportunity for sustainability in promoting green cooperation and development of B&R Countries.

This conference aims to promote research on BRI and cooperation on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) in the B&R Countries. Research priorities may focus on regional and national issues of cleaner production and sustainable consumption in relevant industries under the BRI, and how to further implement the idea that “prevention is better than governance” and to promote “full life cycle thinking” to achieve the SDGs under the climate governance goals such as carbon neutrality.
