US President-elect Donald Trump will appoint his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as a Middle East peace envoy, according to reports published on Tuesday.
In an interview with the New York Times, Trump declared that he “would love to be the one who made peace with Israel and the Palestinians, that would be such a great achievement.”
“A lot of people tell me, really great people tell me, that it’s impossible, you can’t do it. I disagree. I think you can make peace.”
Trump said both Israel and the Palestinians would have to “give up something” to reach a deal, while vowing to use the US veto “100 per cent” of the time at the United Nations Security Council.
Kushner is an Orthodox Jew and well known as a supporter of Israel. According to Trump, Kushner “could be very helpful” in brokering an agreement between Israel and Palestine, working in a region “he knows”.
