Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, our responsibilities are to learn and teach. We need to read, engage in discussion and keep up with cutting edge research to equip our self with the relevant and latest information. We need an effective teaching methodology to spread the knowledge that we have acquired to the student. They should be the centre of teaching and learning activity. I believe there is no bad student, only bad teaching technique. We need to learn how to teach and teach our student how to learn.

On Assessment and Evaluation

I believe, the purpose of assessment and evaluation is not only to measure student’s performance but as a tool to help the teacher to provide constructive feedback to the student so they will continuously improve. In some of my course, I provide the student with feedback on their assessment to help clear their misunderstanding and enhance their mastery of the topic. This can be done for assessment such as quizzes, tests and projects and not possible for the final exam. With the close-book-form of the final exam, I think the student is not evaluated for their understanding of the subject but rather on the ability to memorize the topic.

Teaching Goals

By the end of each course, I hope the student will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental concept of each topic
  • Solve basic engineering problem using the knowledge that they have acquired
  • Relate the topic with the one that they have and will learn
  • Learn related topic by themselves

On Teaching Development

There is a lot that I need to improve especially on the effective teaching technique. I’m currently implementing student-centred-learning through the use of active and blended learning methodology. The former through in-class activity while the latter through the use of e-learning and other online lectures.
