16 July 2025, Wednesday – Yesterday, I managed to find a quiet corner in UTM KL to “fly” virtually to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), where I had the honour of delivering a session during the Innovation Talk in conjunction with KREANOVA 5.0—a fantastic initiative by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), UMS.

My topic was “Innovation & Commercialization”, where I shared practical insights on how research ideas especially in the medical and healthcare fields can be translated into real-world solutions and potentially commercialized for broader impact.

This program was especially meaningful as it aimed to inspire and empower doctors and medical practitioners to innovate and take the next step in commercializing their creations. In a field where innovation can save lives, encouraging this mindset is crucial.

KREANOVA 5.0 is more than just a talk series aligns with PPPM-PT 2015–2025 by promoting empowered governance and a strong innovation ecosystem. Among its objectives are strengthen university-wide innovation practices in line with UMS Key Result Area 4, foster a culture of creative thinking and innovation among UMS staff, encourage the adoption of innovative management approaches, advance UMS towards becoming a world-class innovative institution.

A special thanks to Prof. Mohamad Zul Hilmey for connecting me with the inspiring team at UMS, and to Dr. Timothy Wong Leong Wei, the session moderator, for the warm welcome and great moderation.
Innovation is not confined to labs or prototypes, it begins with mindset and culture. It was a pleasure to contribute, even virtually, to a university that is boldly embracing this vision.

Until next time, UMS. Hopefully in person soon!
