A Reflection on Earth’s Fragile State and the Importance of Recycling Used Cooking Oil

“We are all astronauts in a spinning spaceship. Our oxygen and water are also diminishing, but we have no place to go…”

These words were spoken by a television anchor during the tense moments awaiting the return of three astronauts from the Aquarius spacecraft during the Apollo 13 mission. As they hovered on the brink of disaster, running out of oxygen and water, the anchor’s reflection painted a striking metaphor of Earth’s fragile state. It was a sobering reminder that our planet, like a spaceship, has finite resources—and we must care for it with the urgency it deserves.

This analogy resonated deeply with me today as I joined the Good Earth Exhibition 2024 at Sutera Mall, Skudai, Johor Bahru. Organized with a strong commitment to environmental awareness, the event served as an inspiring platform to discuss how small, conscious actions can lead to a healthier planet.

Recycling Used Cooking Oil: A Simple Step with Big Impact

Among the topics I was invited to discuss was the importance of recycling used cooking oil, commonly referred to as MMT (Minyak Masak Terpakai) or UCO (Used Cooking Oil). While it may seem insignificant, improper disposal of cooking oil poses a severe threat to the environment. When poured down drains, it can clog sewer systems, pollute waterways, and harm marine life.

Through initiatives like the Oil2Wang Kiosk—a technology designed to purchase used cooking oil from the public—we can turn what is often discarded as waste into something valuable. This system not only reduces pollution but also supports the creation of biofuels and other sustainable products.

Educating communities about the potential of MMT recycling is crucial, and events like this exhibition play an important role in spreading the message.

Sutera Mall: A Beacon of Environmental Advocacy

A heartfelt thank you goes to Sutera Mall, Skudai, for their unwavering dedication to promoting environmental sustainability. Their consistent efforts to organize eco-themed events, like the Good Earth Exhibition, demonstrate their commitment to nurturing a greener future for the community.

A special shoutout also goes to Iskandar Puteri Rendah Karbon and Dr. Nina Diana Nawi for their support in inviting our team from Oil2Wang. Together, we are striving to make sustainable practices accessible and practical for everyone.

A Call to Action: Love Our Planet

The metaphor of Earth as a spaceship serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to care for this precious planet. Recycling used cooking oil may seem like a small act, but it is one of many steps we can take to ensure that Earth remains habitable for generations to come.

As we reflect on the fragility of our planet, let us commit to small, meaningful changes in our daily lives. Whether it’s recycling, reducing waste, or supporting community initiatives like those at Sutera Mall, every effort counts.

Sayangi Bumi Kita. Let’s love and protect our Earth—it’s the only home we have.
