Greetings.
Monash University Malaysia’s Gerontechnology Laboratory and Petrosains are teaming up to run a Gerontechnology Challenge, with the aim of encouraging people to use their creativity, expertise or technological knowledge to produce an innovative solution that addresses the needs of older people. This Challenge is supported by the Health and Well-Being cluster of the Global Asia in the 21st Century Platform, and the Malaysian Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS).
This Challenge is open to those residing in Malaysia aged 13 (with adult supervision) and above, and will accept submissions from individuals or teams of up to four. Participants are to propose a product idea (app/wearable devices/assistive devices) for older people within the following domains of human activity:
a) Health & Self-esteem
b) Housing and Daily living
c) Mobility and Transport
d) Communication and Governance
e) Work and Leisure
The selected semi-finalists must attend a compulsory one-day Design Thinking workshop on 5 May 2018. At the workshop, they will be given the opportunity to refine their idea with mentorship from relevant professionals and test their ideas with targeted stakeholders. Semi-finalists will also receive a RM200 seed funding to work on their final product (low-fidelity prototype or a presentation board, or wireframe, etc.) and stand a chance to compete for the following prizes at the Grand Final:
Grand Prize – RM 5,000
Runner-Up – RM 3,000
Third Prize – RM 1,000
Timeline
14 March 2018: Challenge is open for submission
14 April 2018: Submission closing date
24 April 2018: Announcement of semi-finalists
5 May 2018: Design Thinking Workshop. Meet up with mentors and experts for advice and ideas refinement.
24 July 2018: Submission of final presentation deck
4 August 2018: Grand Finals
14,15 & 16 September 2018: Showcase of product ideas at Petrosains Science Festival 2018 for all winners*

Eligibility
-Malaysians or Non-Malaysians above 18 years old. Applicants aged 13-17 years old can participate in the challenge, under supervision of at least one adult member.
-Applicants can join in individually or a team of not more than four (4) members.
-All Semi-finalists are required to attend a Design Thinking session on 5th May 2018 (Admission is FREE).
