He received his undergraduate degree in Science (Biotechnology) in the year 2006.
After graduating in 2006, he spent a year working as a Research Assistant in two of established universities in Malaysia; Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). During his stint as a research assistant at UiTM and UPM, he involved with several projects mainly focusing on the pharmacokinetics of natural products and lignocellulosic production from environmental waste or biomass.
After a year’s work in a research environment, he joined academia and appointed as a Tutor with the Faculty of Biosciences and Bioengineering (FBB), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). In 2008, he was offered a scholarship to continue his Masters in Biotechnology at University of Malaya. Dr. Mohd Helmi completed his Masters of Biotechnology with the final project working on seaweed as a medium to remove nutrients from shrimp pond effluent.
In the year 2011, he was offered a scholarship from UTM/SLAI for a full-research leading to a PhD degree at University College London (UCL). He completed his Ph.D. Biochemical Engineering in December 2015. His research, which focused on micro bioreactor for rapid process development of antibody production, was accepted with minor correction. After he completed his Ph.D., he went back to UTM and promoted to Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Biosciences and Medical Engineering (FBME), UTM.
