About Me

Dr. Mohd Helmi Sani is a young and inspiring academician and researcher. His research interest is in the area of animal cell technology, stem cell culture, fermentation technology, and bioreactors. He has published his research in several journals, book chapters in the ISI and Scopus indexed articles. Apart from that, he has presented his work at national and international conferences, seminars and workshops.  For academic teaching, he teach the subject of  Introduction to Bioprocess Engineering, Fermentation Technology, Environmental Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, and Industrial Technology and Bioreactor Design.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Mohd Helmi was born in Johor Bahru on the 2 May 1982 (8 Rejab 1402). Originally, his descendants were from the state of Malacca. His father Mr. Sani bin Sahar was from Masjid Tanah and his mother Mrs. Malinah binti Wahab was from Jasin, Malacca. Dr. Mohd Helmi is happily married to Suhaida binti Mustapha and is blessed with a pair of children; Nur Syauqina Damia and Muhammad Harith Imad.

Dr. Mohd Helmi received his primary education from Sekolah Kebangsaan Majidi Baru  and secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Tun Syed Nasir Ismail until form 5. After SPM, he spent 2 years at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Matriculation Centre before continuing his undergraduate degree at the same university with a Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology). He received his undergraduate degree in Science (Biotechnology) in the year 2006.

After graduating in 2006, he spent a year working as a Research Assistant in two of established universities in Malaysia; Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). During his stint as a research assistant at UiTM and UPM, he involved with several projects mainly focusing on the pharmacokinetics of natural products and lignocellulosic production from environmental waste or biomass.

After a year’s work in a research environment, he joined academia and appointed as a Tutor with the Faculty of Biosciences and Bioengineering (FBB), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). In 2008, he was offered a scholarship to continue his Masters in Biotechnology at University of Malaya. Dr. Mohd Helmi completed his Masters of Biotechnology with the final project working on seaweed as a medium to remove nutrients from shrimp pond effluent.

In the year 2011, he was offered a scholarship from UTM/SLAI for a full-research leading to a PhD degree at University College London (UCL). He completed his Ph.D. Biochemical Engineering in December 2015. His research, which focused on micro bioreactor for rapid process development of antibody production, was accepted with minor correction. After he completed his Ph.D., he went back to UTM and promoted to Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Biosciences and Medical Engineering (FBME), UTM.

Currently, Dr. Helmi is an affiliate with the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, UTM. He is the Programme Coordinator for the Master of Philosophy (Biosciences) and Head of Cluster (Industrial Biotechnology) at the Department of Biosciences.
