Biography

Lau Kwan Yiew (K. Y. Lau) was born in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. He received his BEng degree in Electrical Engineering with First Class Honours from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2007. After working as an Electronics Development Engineer at Dyson Malaysia, he joined the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as a Tutor in 2008. He then completed his MEng degree in Electrical Power Engineering at the same university in 2010. Later in 2013, he received his PhD degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. He is an Associate Professor and the Quality Manager (Calibration) at the Institute of High Voltage and High Current, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia; he served as the Laboratory Head at the institute from 2015 until 2017. He is a Competent Electrical Engineer of the Energy Commission of Malaysia, a Professional Engineer (PEng) of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), an ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE) of the ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer Coordinating Committee (ACPECC), a Professional Technologist of the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT), a Chartered Engineer (CEng) of the Engineering Council (EC), United Kingdom, an European Engineer (EUR ING) of the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI), a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Senior Member of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS), and a Committee Member of Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet). In 2017-2018, he was the Chair of the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter. His research interests include high voltage engineering, dielectric materials and renewable energy systems.
