Evolution of Mining cultural landscape of Taiping, Perak, Malaysia

The tin mining industry is one of the oldest industry heritages in Malaya during the 18th century. It was the main economic contributor to the formation of a mining town and cultural landscape. Taiping, is located in Larut District, Perak state, was the vital tin producer of Malay states during the heyday of British colonization. However, due to the tin mines depleted, the former mining town and the remnant industrial landscape became the most challenging part of heritage conservation. Today, the legacies of post-mining landscape and built heritage are essential for Taiping in achieving sustainable cultural heritage conservation to imbue values of history, culture, economy, and milieu in retaining its sense of identity.
This talk-sharing session will discuss the mining cultural landscape and the importance of heritage landscape conservation by exploring Taiping’s mining landscape transformation. Moreover, the dialogue will further discuss the heritage managing of the mining landscape in Asian regions?
