Profile

Dr. Muhammad Hisyam LEE was born in Malacca, Malaysia in 1966. He holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Statistics from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Dr Hisyam is a fellow of the Academy of Professor Malaysia (APM). He served as Vice President (2012 – 2014) and Council Member (2008 – 2012) of the Institute Statistics of Malaysia (ISM).

Dr Hisyam is a Professor of Statistics at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He has served as the University Senator of UTM since 2014. Dr Hisyam is currently the Data Management and Analytics Director at the Strategy and Corporate Affairs Office. He managed university data to ensure the highest quality for top management consumption and request from external agencies. He is responsible to periodically provide verified APMF, MyMoheS, and SETARA data to MOHE and exhibit data for the annual BoD retreat. UTM regularly received a 5-star and 100% score for recognition of UTM quality data submitted to MyMoheS, KPT. He served and contributed as an academic administrator for various posts at the university level, with more than ten years of experience. He led a team to develop a Power BI data visualisation for academic-related data and the first integrated online campus-wide research project management system, a.k.a RADIS. He also developed a meeting management system for JKTNCA.

He has contributed to academic programmes accreditation at the national level in Mathematics and Statistics since 2012. He is a SWA auditor for MQA and an auditor for JPT in Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA). He has chaired numerous audit sessions and audited various IPTA and MRU since 2015. He has contributed to quality assurance and standards of universities and colleges in Malaysia through the SETARA rating organised by MOHE Malaysia. He has been appointed as Adjunct Professor for the Department of Statistics, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Visiting Professor for the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, UTHM, and External Examiner for various academic programmes in Malaysia.

His contributions at the national level include chairing over 15 academic programme accreditation (provision and final) audits for undergraduate and postgraduate in Mathematics and Statistics organised by MQA for over ten years. He chaired eight institutional audits (universities and colleges) for quality assurance and standards through the SETARA 2022 rating organised by MOHE. He also chaired a working group project organised by MOHE in 2020 to analyse graduate employability. He is appointed as the reference expert for studies on the Malaysian Youth Index (MYI), which is a national agenda and for the analytical model development of youth’s skills and mental wellbeing carried out by the Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES) under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He also served in Research Ethics Committee, IYRES. He was a consultant for the UTM-MiGHT project on educational institution readiness in industry revolution 4.0. He actively evaluates PhD and Master’s thesis from local and overseas universities. Dr Hisyam regularly receives invitations to assess academic staff for promotion to Professor or Associate Professor from local and abroad universities.

At the university level, he contributed as a chairperson and committee member. Namely, he chaired a committee for academic staff performance evaluation and promotion (2020 – 2022) and a committee for the online system development of Differentiated Career Pathways (DCP) Academic Staff (2017 – 2019). He was also a committee member of the University Accreditation Committee (JKAU) for three terms (2017 – 2023).

Dr Hisyam is a scientist in the field of Statistics, with a h-index of 23, 2000 citations and more than 100 publications. He has contributed over 30 articles in Q1 and Q2 journals of WoS in 5 years (2016 – 2020). He also served as the editor for seven journals. Regularly, he receives invitations as a keynote speaker for conferences or seminars and as a facilitator for workshops or short courses.

He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate statistics courses such as Statistics, Engineering Statistics, Experimental Design, Statistical Process Control, Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Generalized Linear Models, and Research Methodology for over 25 years. Dr Hisyam supervises local and international postgraduate students. His students are the recipient of the Pro-Chancellor Award or Postgraduate Best Student Award.
