Last week I asked my SHPS students to reflect on the topic ” “Philosophy & the contemporary educational issues: Share your thoughts…” via Padlet. Going through their responses gave the sense that the students have the ability to make sense of the topics that had been discussed during OL and related them with the challenges posed by the pandemic. I do feel that reflective practice is one of the mechanism in my attempt to humanising OL by encouraging students to make “relatable” of things that they are experiencing during their learning process.
Cognitive psychology and your “self”
Last week, I posed a question for my MPPE1113 Cognitive Psychology class, asking them to do reflection based on the previous asynchronous activity. The question on the Padlet was:
After watching the videos, it is time to do a reflection. In what way do you think that the knowledge of cognitive psychology will benefit your “self” i.e. as a learner, a teacher, a parent, etc. Please share your thoughts.
In particular, I really enjoyed reading the reflection by one of my student, Tey Miao Hui:
Thank you Dr. for the videos sharing. I would like to share my thought
Self: I can better understand about myself. We always talk to the inner self “Why am I being emotional after receiving the news of my friend’s wedding? Why am I no longer loving ice cream? Why am I being irritated when people asking for my help that I usually love to deal with?” In my perspective, people change from time to time and we have to better understand ourselves in every stage of our life so that we can easily accept everything that happens to our life rather than being negative and suffering in despair for a long time. With the knowledge of cognitive psychology, you will not be surprising when you give yourself a try on a new challenge or thing that you would not try previously because you know that it is just a transformation of our mind.
SHPP1002 (03) Student’s Learning Reflection
Last week, I conducted an activity on Padlet as to encourage student’s reflective practice by asking them to respond to the topic of discussion: “Philosophy & the contemporary educational issues: Share your thoughts…”
It was nice to know that students were able to summarise their views on the topic, as well as to position their views within the contemporary issue related to COVID-19 pandemic. It was interesting to read entries that included the importance of educational technology during the pandemic, given the fact that students of this section are all specialising in Islamic studies (SHPI).

Briefing on Research Project Management (FRGS 2020 recipients)
We had a session on “Taklimat Urus Tadbir Dana Penyelidikan KPT kepada penerima Geran FRGS 2020” with RMC yesterday, which focusing on:
1. Research project management
2. Financial management
3. Research project monitoring
4. Roles and responsibility
5. Integrity and research ethics
All guidelines can be referred to via this link: https://rmc.utm.my/research-document/
The next day, an online coaching session was also organised by RMC to facilitate researchers in relation to:
- Completion of FRGS agreement

Reflective Brain project secured FRGS 2020 (Phase 1)
Alhamdulillah, on 30 October 2020, we received an email from RMC informing that our Reflective Brain project successfully secured FRGS 2020 (Phase 1). The project, which is officially entitled “Framework for Critical Reflective Thinking based on Neuroeducational Approach“, has been approved and granted RM56,200 from the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).
Personally, this is my second time receiving FRGS after my first project ended in 2016. Indeed, it was quite competitive this time around. 142 (out of 362) applications from UTM succeeded in securing the grant. Credits should be given to my faculty, FSSH, in collaboration with my Research Alliance, for all the workshops organised since early 2020. And also to the facilitators who had shared all the valuable tips, as well as the internal evaluators for all the constructive comments and suggestions throughout the process proposal refinement.
Song of the Day #10
“I wish we’d move together – this time the bosses sued
But we’re caught up in the wilderness and an ever changing mood
Teardrops turn to children – who’ve never had the time
To commit the sins they pay for through – another’s evil mind…”
