Dr. Nasrul is a dedicated academic, researcher, sports leader, and professional in Electrical and Computer Engineering, embodying excellence in knowledge, technology, and community empowerment. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, and Systems Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1999, followed by a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2002. He later completed his Ph.D. in Engineering at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, in 2009. Since joining Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1999, he has devoted his career to advancing academic scholarship, innovative research, and transformative education.
Driven by a deep passion for teaching, Dr. Nasrul is committed to shaping future engineers through meaningful and high-quality learning experiences. His research excellence is demonstrated through more than 100 publications in various journals such as Scopus and Web of Science, spanning biomedical image processing, medical electronics, artificial intelligence, and rehabilitation engineering. His work focuses on developing intelligent engineering solutions that bridge technology and healthcare, particularly in diagnostic systems, assistive technologies, and human-centered computing.
Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Nasrul has served in significant leadership roles, including Head of Department at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Biosciences and Medical Engineering, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening academic programmes, research culture, and strategic development. He also served as Director of Electronic and Computer Engineering until 2019, contributing to institutional innovation and research advancement.
Beyond academia, Dr. Nasrul is widely recognised as a visionary sports and community leader. He has represented university and civil service sports communities in competitions such as SUKUM, SUKANUN, and MAKSAK, earning multiple medal achievements while promoting competitive spirit and teamwork. His dedication to community service and sports leadership was recognised in 2025 through the Community Service Award and the Sports Leadership Figure Award at Citra Karisma Recognition Programme, honouring his outstanding contributions to community engagement, inclusive sports development, and leadership excellence. For his outstanding service at the national level, he was awarded the Pingat Perkhidmatan Cemerlang (PPC) by Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi Malaysia in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of para chess in Malaysia since 2017, particularly in coaching, mentoring, and supporting national para chess athletes.
Dr. Nasrul is also a prominent figure in inclusive sports development. He currently serves as the President of Persatuan Catur OKU Johor and Vice President of Persatuan Catur OKU Malaysia. He also serves as Vice President of Persatuan Catur Negeri Kelantan, where he has been actively involved in nurturing and developing young chess talents in Kelantan, contributing to grassroots chess development and supporting the growth of emerging players in the state. Since 2017, he has been actively supporting para chess athletes in Johor and Malaysia, mentoring and coaching national para chess talents in international competitions. His guidance has contributed to Malaysia’s remarkable achievement of winning the bronze medal at ASEAN Para Games Thailand 2025.
His leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in the values of excellence, compassion, and service, aligning with the principle of “Kerana Tuhan Untuk Manusia” championed by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He strongly believes that empowering persons with disabilities is not merely a responsibility but a noble investment in human potential, where determination, opportunity, and guidance can transform excellence into reality.
As a Professional Engineer and Professional Technologist since 2020, Dr. Nasrul continues to stand at the intersection of academia, technology, sports leadership, and social impact. His lifelong mission is to advance scientific knowledge, nurture young talents, promote inclusive sports, and contribute to national and global excellence through education, research, and community empowerment.
