Biography

Professor Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin obtained her Bachelor of Science (Honours), Master’s degree, and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from the State University of New York (now known as Binghamton University), Binghamton, New York, USA. Her research specialisations encompass Group Theory, Graph Theory, Formal Language Theory, Splicing Systems, and their applications.

She is currently a Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), where she is actively involved in teaching, research, and academic leadership. She also serves as one of the mentors in the Faculty of Science’s SUNSHINE++ mentoring programme.

Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin has published more than 500 research articles in reputable national and international journals and conference proceedings. She has delivered numerous keynote addresses and invited lectures in her areas of expertise, both locally and internationally. In addition, she has been frequently invited as a speaker for supervision, postgraduate mentoring, and research publication workshops and courses at UTM, other local universities, and at higher education institutions abroad.

She currently serves as an Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member of the indexed Malaysian Journal of Mathematical Sciences (MJMS) and is also an editorial board member of several national and international journals, including Jurnal Teknologi, Menemui Matematik, Punjab University Journal of Mathematics, and the Arabian Journal of Mathematics.

In terms of postgraduate supervision, Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin has successfully supervised and graduated 49 PhD students, 31 Master’s students, and 93 undergraduate students. Among her notable supervisory achievements is the supervision of Dr. Hazzirah Izzati Mat Hassim, recognised as the Youngest PhD Holder in the Malaysia Book of Records (2014). In recognition of her outstanding supervisory practice, she was awarded the Recognised Research Supervisor status by the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) in 2023.

Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin has secured more than 20 research grants as a Principal Investigator and over 25 grants as a collaborator. She has also held several key leadership and administrative positions at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, including Head of the Postgraduate Department, Faculty of Science (2007–2012); Deputy Dean at the School of Graduate Studies (2012–2016); Director of Global Education and Student Experience at UTM International (2016–2018); Associate Director (Student Services and Global Education Experience) (2018–2019); Associate Director (Global Strategy and Engagement) (2019–2022); and Acting Director of UTM International (August 2022–January 2023).

In addition, she has been appointed by the Ministry of Higher Education as a UTM Internal Auditor for the Malaysia Research Assessment (MYRA) since 2017. She also served as a UTM Senator from 15 January 2020 to 14 January 2023 and has been reappointed for the term from 16 January 2026 to 15 January 2029.
