The Department of Quantity Surveying, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia organized an engaging and informative QS-Construction Career Carnival on June 21-22, 2023. The event showcased various industry leaders and professionals while placing a special research showcase by research groups. The BIM Research Group’s comprehensive display at the QS-Construction Career Carnival underscored the significance of their research areas in shaping the future of the construction industry.
The carnival served as a valuable platform for students to interact with industry professionals, gain insights into the construction sector, and explore potential career opportunities. However, the BIM Research Group becoming a hub of innovation, knowledge sharing, and research prospects for the students.
At the BIM Research Group booth, students were introduced to the world of BIM and its significance in revolutionizing the construction industry. The researchers proudly displayed their ongoing projects, research findings, and technological advancements, captivating the attention of visitors. The booth also showcased the various research grants available, highlighting the potential for students to contribute to cutting-edge research initiatives.
The BIM Research Group’s booth presented their diverse research areas and ongoing projects. The following research areas were prominently featured:
- Technology: The group highlighted the multidimensional capabilities of BIM, spanning from BIM 3D to BIM 7D. Students were introduced to the potential of BIM for creating immersive experiences through augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). The integration of BIM with geographic information systems (GIS) was also explored. Additionally, the group showcased the advancements in automation in construction, including the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. BIM’s role in water-efficient management was also emphasized.
- Management: The BIM Research Group delved into the management aspects of BIM, covering various areas such as BIM legal considerations, smart/intelligent contracts, BIM safety, and occupational safety, health, and construction industry (OSHCIM) practices. They also presented their research on BIM’s contribution to performance measurement, supply chain management, designer behavior, and virtual collaboration. The integration of Industrialized Building Systems (IBS) with BIM was explored as well.
- Education: The group showcased their research in the field of BIM education, highlighting the gamification of safety practices and IBS implementation. They also demonstrated the use of augmented reality (AR) for teaching and learning purposes. Additionally, the BIM Research Group presented their work on developing educational frameworks for BIM implementation in the quantity surveying (QS) and construction domains. The focus on adult learning methodologies and the development of an OSHCIM education framework were also highlighted.
A key objective of the BIM Research Group’s presence was to inspire students to pursue postgraduate studies and explore the realm of research within the field. By promoting research opportunities, the group aimed to foster a culture of innovation and encourage students to push the boundaries of construction technology.
Moreover, the BIM Research Group provided hands-on demonstrations of VR and AR tools, enabling students to understand its practical applications in real-world construction projects. They also conducted interactive sessions, delivering presentations on BIM methodologies, collaborative workflows, and the benefits of adopting BIM in the construction industry.

The carnival also featured other industry leaders, including developers such as IOI Properties Berhad Group Kempas and renowned QS firms like JQS, TYC, CEM, TOTAL QS, and KAS. Contractors such as Woon Brothers Construction, RSM Builders, and M22 Pte Ltd (Singapore) were also present, providing students with valuable insights into their respective fields.
Industry and Professional bodies, including RISM, GLODON and MBOT, participated actively, emphasizing the importance of industry certifications and promoting professional development among students.
Through their engaging booth, the group not only educated students about BIM but also inspired them to pursue postgraduate studies and contribute to the advancement of construction technology. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to explore career pathways, network with industry professionals, and gain valuable insights into the dynamic world of construction.
