Abstract

There are growing interest worldwide on the use of online learning in higher education, notably the massive open online course (MOOC). Malaysia that aspire to provide greater access to higher education, definitely find MOOC to be a very important enabler and alternative that provide opportunities for greater students access and also provide life-long learner to learn and re-learn. However little study has been carried out on the use and effectiveness of the MOOCs ecosystem in Malaysia such as the readiness of the faculty members, and students as well as the Learning Management support system. Hence this study will explore the readiness of academic faculty in implementation of MOOCs. Then the students’ needs and expectation on online learning and specifically on MOOCs will be surveyed. Based on these two findings, the feasibility study on MOOCs for Civil Engineering Curriculum will be proposed. Three MOOCs courses i.e. Highway Engineering, Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Professional Ethics will be developed and the effectiveness will be assessed. Hence, recommendations on the good MOOCs practices in Civil Engineering curriculum will be presented.
