Adnan Hassan is an Associate Professor (Industrial Engineering) at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He is a Professional Technologist (Ts) registered with the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT). He earned B.Sc. (Hons: Cum Laude) in Industrial Engineering from the University of Miami, Florida, U.S.A, M.Sc. in Industrial Measurement Systems from Brunel University London, U.K., and Ph.D. in Mechanical – Industrial Engineering from UTM. Prior to joining UTM as an assistant lecturer in 1989, he served Malaysia Aica (Production Executive), Malaysia Airlines (Management Trainee) and Petronas (Intern/Trainee). In UTM he has held several administrative positions, namely, Head of Metrology Laboratory (1992-1996), Head of Industrial Engineering Panel (1996-1997), Programme Coordinator for Master of Engineering (Mechanical – Advanced Manufacturing Technology) (2003-2005), Head of Department (Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering) (2007 – 2009). He was seconded to King Abdulaziz University (KAU) (Nov 2009 – Jun 2011), Saudi Arabia where he was the founding Chairman for the Department of Industrial Engineering, KAU-Rabigh. He has served as the Head for Internal Academic Audit (School of Mechanical Engineering, UTM), participated in various self-accreditation audits for UTM Centre for Quality and Risk Management (QRiM), a member of the Academic Committee and a member of the Examination Committee (School of Mechanical Engineering, UTM). Nationally, he is a Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) academic programme auditor since 2004 where he has completed numerous audits covering diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for approval, full accreditation, and compliance audits.
Dr. Adnan has lectured more than 250 credit hours covering undergraduate courses (Industrial Engineering, Project Management, Maintenance, Quality System, Quality Engineering, Productivity, Production Planning, Engineering Management, Ergonomics, Metrology, Production Technology, and Statics) and postgraduate courses (Production Operations Management, Operation Research, Project Management, Industrial Measurement, and Research Methodology). Besides supervising undergraduate senior projects (about 90 students), he has successfully supervised 29 master’s projects/research and 6 Ph.D theses. His expertise focuses on pattern recognition for quality monitoring, lean six sigma/quality engineering, supply chain, operations management, and academic accreditation. His research has been funded by internal grants and external grants (European Commission and Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation). Dr. Adnan has reviewed/referred more than 50 manuscripts mainly for ISI indexed journals. He received an Outstanding Reviewer Award (2017) from Elsevier for his reviewing contribution to Computer & Industrial Engineering (Q1 International Journal). Dr Adnan has been invited as a keynote speaker/distinguished speaker/guest speaker at several international events in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sudan. He was an invited visiting professor at Sudan University Science and Technology in 2016.
Dr. Adnan is a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE, U.S.A), a Senior Member of IEEE, a member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology (MIET, U.K), IEOM Society International, and IEM Malaysia. He is an External Examiner for Bachelor of Engineering Tech (Quality Engineering) programme at University Kuala Lumpur-MiTEC. He has served as an internal and external examiner for master’s and Ph.D. theses for several universities in Malaysia such as KUiTHO/UTHM, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He received the UTM Excellence Service Awards in 2003, 2006, and 2013, and the King Abdulaziz University Excellence Service Award in 2011. The IEOM Society International has recognised him with the Outstanding Professor in Lean Six Sigma Award (2021) in appreciation of his contributions in research and teaching, and services to the profession. In 2022 he received a Distinguished Educator Award from the same society.
