KOTA TINGGI: It was worth the sacrifice for a team of three students from SM Sains Batu Pahat after they emerged as the winners in the state-level National Science Challenge 2016 (NSC) here.
Group leader Mohamad Samsarizal Hashim, 16, said that they were supposed to sit for the Additional Mathematics exam paper but in order to participate in the NSC, they had to postpone sitting for it.
“It was a stressful week for the three of us as we had to prepare for the exams as well as the challenge at the same time.
The three, including Muhammad Hafiz Abdul Aziz and Muhamad Yusri Jailani, both 16, will be representing the state at the NSC 2016 grand final, which is scheduled to be held between Aug 11 and 18 at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
SMK (P) Sultan Ibrahim was the first runners up, and was represented by Sia Woon Teen and T. Lelayani, both 16-year-olds.
They were also preparing for the school exams as well as the challenge at the same time.
“It was a great experience for us as this is our first time joining such a national challenge and also the first year for our school.
“For the past two days, we read the encyclopaedia given by our mentor to prepare for the challenge.
“We are glad that we did well in answering the questions in the three categories comprising individual, group and open although the questions were tough and most of it not in our academic syllabus,” she said, adding that taking part was a huge achievement for them and also for the school.
The third place winner, Sek Men Tun Fatimah was represented by Form 4 students Nashwa Nabihah Saidul Yazan, Nora Adlina Mustaffa and Amni Nabilah Mohd Zaidi.
They said the open category was the most challenging in NSC 2016.
