Biography

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Cher Siang obtained his B.Eng. Civil Engineering (2001), M.Eng. (Structures)(2004) and PhD in Civil Engineering (2009) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He worked as a lecturer and assistant professor in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) from Year 2009 to 2010. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Structures and Materials, Faculty of Civil Engineering, UTM. He attached to UTM Forensic Engineering Centre (FEC) in Year 2015 as a research fellow.

Dr. Tan has taught in different areas of Civil and Structural Engineering.  He has strong research interest in the field of structural steelwork, especially cold-formed steel structures and lightweight construction. Between Year 2013 to 2015, he has collaborated with Professor Alain Nussbaumer from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland on the investigation of feasibility of ISO shipping containers for post-disasters reconstruction. At present, Dr. Tan has about 70 scientific publications. He has involved in 15 research and development projects (5 as project leader) funded by UTM, UTAR, Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). He has supervised four PhD and one master students, three of them were graduated in Year 2013, 2015 and 2016 respectively. He is a Graduate Member of Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM).
