Short Biodata
Dr Farhana Diana Deris is a Senior Lecturer at the Language Academy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She currently holds the post Assistant Dean (External and Global Engagement) of the Faculty.
She previously held the portfolio as Manager of International Alliances at the office of UTM International. Her administrative role covered, among others, the coordination of the university’s participation in alliances. She also held executive roles for a number of alliances including as the Coordinator for the Asia Technological University Network, Secretary for the ASEAN Learning Network, and being the university’s Erasmus+ Institutional Coordinator, and SATU network coordinator. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Linguistics Association of Korea, and of the Editorial Board of the Society of Teaching English through Media based in Korea, and a member of the Asia Teaching English as a Foreign Language (AsiaTEFL), the national Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA), the Johor English Language Teacher’s Association (JELTA), and the Indonesia-Malaysia Research Consortium (IMRC). She is also a member and expert resource for the Qualitative Research Association of Malaysia (QRAM).
She was also the Coordinator for the Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) Postgraduate Programme (PhD and MEd by Research). Before that she was the Head of Microsite Management for MyLinE, the national English language learning portal. She teaches Description of English as part of the Master’s TESL programme, and several other courses for the undergraduate degree programme (Structure of English, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Language Games in the Classroom, and Academic Skills for Teachers of ESL). She also teaches English language proficiency programmes (Academic English Skills, Advanced Academic Skills, and English for Professional Purposes). Her research interests include technology enhanced teaching and learning for engaging 21st century English language learners, and building and sustaining partnerships through new media communication in the context of HEI internationalisation. She is currently a member of the Technology and Language Education research group under the Smart Digital Community research alliance of the university. Her current research activities include English language enhancement for the tourism communities of the State of Johor, Malaysia, language and culture development for border tourism in Bintan Island, Indonesia.
She is also actively involved in student leaders’ activities. She recently completed her term as the Advisor for UTM ACES Toastmasters Club and continued her term as the Advisor for the Sabah’s Student Representatives (PERMAS).
