As the academic landscape navigated the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Virtual Lab emerged as a pioneering force within the Faculty of Science at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), specifically within the Chemistry Department. Tasked with crafting modules and storylines in collaboration with CDex and MagicX, the Virtual Lab aimed to bridge the gap between traditional hands-on learning and the growing need for alternative lab experiences.

In response to the pandemic-induced limitations, the Virtual Lab embraced alternative learning methods, ensuring students could engage with practical aspects of their coursework. Currently, the Faculty of Science has successfully published two modules: the ‘Lab Tour & Safety’ and ‘Handling of Glassware and Equipment, and Chemical Disposal.’ These modules are integral components of a comprehensive seven-module course. The third module, ‘Preparation of Buffer Solutions and pH Measurement,’ is currently in production.

This innovative approach to virtual labs not only serves as a standalone learning experience but also acts as a preparatory tool for in-person classes. The hope is that the Virtual Lab becomes a trailblazing model for teaching and learning, providing a flexible, dynamic, and inclusive educational experience for students at UTM and beyond.
