Why do these kids become jokers and hecklers in class in the first place? I have some theories. This is a continuing discussion from how to handle jokers in class.
They crave attention
Any form of attention, be it positive or negative. They want to be heard or seen by either the teacher, a girl they fancy or the popular kids in class. They equate attention with importance, and strive to get it any way they can.
They live off of reaction
This is reminiscent of when boys in the playground pull the girls pigtails to get a reaction. Some of these students are still in that mindset.
Just plain rude
Yes, there are those who make jokes or heckle just because. They may think that they are better than the teacher and do not need to be there. They might also not like the teacher and showing it.
The big man on campus
There are students who are slightly more ‘popular’ (and I use this term loosely) among other students. They like that status and always try to show off. If the teacher is flustered by your questions or your jokes and quips, it’s a score for the big man on campus (in his head at the very least).
Homeboys
These are the friends (or should I say ‘lackeys’) of the big man on campus. Their role, if joking is not their strong point, is to laugh and clap along. This is their show of support.
Anonymity
In a class, students sit in groups and this provides some form of anonymity to the students. This minuscule anonymity gives them the power to speak up, make jokes even when they are very shy in normal circumstances.
