Faculty of Computing (FC) in collaboration with PERSAKA held a community service program targeted for Form 3 students right after their PT3. PERSAKA is the Computer Science Student Society whose members are all students of FC.

This program, called FOCCUS (Faculty of Computing  Community Service), focused on the issue of Cyber Safety. This one-day program was divided into 2 sections: a talk in the morning and a cyber-safety explorace after lunch. I was involved in both sections. The talk concentrated on possible issues of safety while using the Internet and also some tips on staying safe online. The students were also exposed to harmful side-effects to health from too much and uncontrolled Internet and phone usage.

The Explorace used a format much like the Amazing Race program, where teams are given clues to the next stop after they have successfully completed the task at that particular stop. In this particular explorace, some elements of cyber safety were employed in some stops (like quiz and puzzles), while other stops were more geared to working together in a team and just having plain old fun.

The explorace was managed and ran by the students in my Computer Security class as part of their community service project. I have to give kudos to my students who were giving it their all, especially when almost all were involved in a field trip the day before. I hope that this practice can instill in them the need to always engage with the community and pay it forward with your knowledge.
