On Thursday (17 November 2016), I had the honour of contributing to a Learning Informatic Workshop held at the SMK Tan Sri Jaafar Albar, Sedili. This workshop is part of the iCARE UTM-KEJORA collaborations to use technology to enhance learning, and in this case the focus was on the English language and creativity.

SMK Tan Sri Jaafar Albar is a rural school and the exposure and environment of language are different. Most of the students have not traveled outside of Johor, much less out of Malaysia. This does not mean, however, that they are less creative or even backwards. I found them to be enthusiastic children with an excitement matching  a vigorously shaken bottle of fizzy drink,  just waiting for a chance to ‘explode’.

My talk on presentation skills was preceded by two other modules on ICT and English which was given my the iCARE project leader Prof. Madya Dr Shahida Sulaiman and Creativity and Innovation module by Dr. Raja Zahilah RM Radzi.

In my module, I touched upon the structure of a presentation and the important tips and tricks towards a good (if not great) presentation. The students were an eager bunch, raring to explore and try new things out in their iPads, but time was not our best friend that day. I strongly believe that if they were given a little bit more time, the outcome would have been much, much better.

I do regret the choice of topic we set as something they could use for presentation. It needed more exploration on their part, and did not work well with the time limitation we had. Well, you live and learn. Insya Allah, in the next installations, we will do even better.
