I attended this workshop to enhance my knowledge, so I could better serve my students, my community and my country. I have been blogging, but I believe this can increase the quality of my works. An excellent way to upgrade my blogs and use it for educational purposes. Besides, the facilitators are from the education faculty (Dr Norah and Dr Dayana), so their views are definitely different from my usual gung-ho (read: creative, innovative and fun with a little dash of ‘out-there’) approach to teaching.

Some social networks icons

Students are young (most of the time anyway) and these youngsters are always hanging on the new trends, and they are somewhat glued to their devices. They have an account (or two) on almost all the different social media sites, so it is a good way for us educators to jump on the bandwagon and meet them at their playground.

Understandably, most of us are not comfortable for all the different social media sites. Personally, I am not a big fan of snapchat or instragram. I am kinda shy about appearing on images and videos, though when it comes to thoughts and ideas, I am not shy at all.

Some useful tips :

Pick a medium or social media app that you are comfortable with, or can become comfortable with. No need to put your fingers in all the different pies lest you overtax yourself and not excel in any.

For an article to be read and ranked by Google, you should have the word (representing your article) in 3 places: in title, within the article and in the tag section, also in your image tag (information on the media or image). Example: Social Media safety – so social media in title, in article and in the tags.

Focus on one learning objective, as it should be short and succinct to ensure retention and actual participation.

You can use different social media accounts for different purposes to get the best outcome. For example, maybe Facebook is the best for discussion as opposed to a blog.

In my opinion, use it wisely. You want class participation, and it will not be good if their attention is taken away from the learning objectives due to random attention grabber.

Finger on the pulse

Have your finger on the pulse of the youth (as best as you can). Give it a go. You may turn out to be a natural!
