Today (October 27, 2016) six of us answered a call for help from the Sekolah Menengah Islam Al-Akhyar in Jalan Nong Chik Johor Bahru, to give a talk on cybersafety. There were about 130 students from Year 6 (from the primary school of Al-Akhyar) and students from Forms 1 to 4.
And what a good team it was too, from preparation to video to photography to crowd control. Go Team!
We talked about forty minutes and opened the floor for Q and A. We mainly touched on the importance of the Internet and how easily it can turn to be a negative if we are not careful in our everyday usage. We also touched on some of the health issues of too much Internet and too much ‘phone-time’.
We also talked about the important of personal space both in the physical world and in cyberspace.
The students were attentive and with a little urging of chocolates (that is a marvel I tell you), a few questions were asked and answered. Questions continued to be asked after the session, even outside, as they were a lot of interests from the students, especially the boys. The girls were a little shy, but that did not mean they did not have good questions.
The teachers were cooperative, attentive and have a lot of questions of their own. In short, it was a fruitful visit for all. I hope we brought forth a positive light on our community engagement and our names (UTM, FC, CS, IASRG) will be a beaconĀ for all.
On another note, look at the beautiful abstract art on the right side of the picture. It is really an open window, but it really looks like modern artwork at a glance!
