Horizon 2020 – Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) Staff Exchanges Programme for Reliability and Safety of Engineering and Technology for Large Maritime Engineering Systems (RESET)

25 Jan 2023, Lisbon – Dr. Henry Kang has participated in an international staff exchange and research program at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, hosted by Professor Carlos Guedes Soares. The staff exchange program is sponsored by the Horizon 2020 European Union Funding for Research & Innovation, where both UTM and Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon are collaborators in a project that investigates the reliability and safety of engineering and technology for large maritime engineering systems (RESET), led by Prof Jin Wang from Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom.

The RESET project addresses a vitally challenging problem in the design and operation of large maritime engineering systems. By developing, testing, and applying novel and effective reliability and safety modelling and decision-making models, the project aims to demonstrate that sustainability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness can be improved to a measurable level, resulting in reduced risks, improved reliability, and cost savings.

In this research programme, reliability and safety assessments will be conducted in various industrial sectors, exposing each researcher to different research and application environments. Emerging risks will be assessed, reliability will be estimated under uncertainties, and decision making with illustrative case studies will be developed and disseminated to wider users to generate relevant research impacts. Through collaborative research of a multi- and interdisciplinary nature in the project, the involved researchers will be trained to a level where they are capable of dealing with reliability and safety assessment challenges even in new environments. Through various joint training arrangements and secondments in other organizations, each researcher will gain the necessary skills for their career development in academia and/or industry.

Co-Hosted the 1st Annual Meeting of the Norway-ASEAN Consortium in Risk Management for Safer and Sustainable Ocean (NESS)

6 December 2022, Kuala Lumpur – The world is seeking more opportunities from oceans and oceanic resources, in terms of energy production, transportation, food supply, etc., but almost none of the above activities is free-of-charge to the environment of ocean areas. Challenges of interest conflicts exist between sustainable management of the oceans and operations of business activities that are oriented toward efficiency and profit. Such challenges are intensified when more complex technologies are applied since complexity often means uncertainties, unforeseen events, and difficulties.

Risk management is proving itself as a very useful and proactive tool for developing environmentally friendly technologies for oceans in the longer term. Norway-ASEAN Consortium in Risk Management for Safer and Sustainable Ocean (NESS) is thus designed to respond to this need, and its topics of focus are selected in the oceanic sectors where Norway and ASEAN partners can have a platform to provide a multi-disciplinary and multi-national communication and technical experience exchanges.

Marine Technology Centre, UTM has been entrusted by the NESS consortium to jointly organized the 1st NESS Project Annual Meeting and Symposium in Kuala Lumpur, on 5-6 December 2022.

This annual meeting and symposium were jointly organized by UTM and NTNU. A total of 25 project team members from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, University of Stavanger, Southeast University of Norway, University of Indonesia, National University of Civil Engineering (Vietnam), Mahidol University (Thailand), De La Salle University, Santo Tomas University (Philippines), and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia had participated this annual event.

Public Engagement with Press Conference of The Ocean Cleanup’s Project at Klang River

5 April 2022, Klang – Marine Technology Center (MTC) in collaboration with the Ocean Cleanup for identifying the strategic site of Interceptor 005 deployment. The placement of the floating river cleanup system, Interceptor 005 on the Klang River near Port Klang is based on the third generation technologies from the Ocean Cleanup, a non-governmental organization (NGO) from the Netherlands, which is founded by Mr. Boyan Slat. This new Interceptor will further enhance the river cleanup ability on the Klang River.

Among the consideration of the site selection, the scientists from UTM conducted data collection for the annual floating debris discharge, identified the hydrodynamics and flow-structure interactions, and determined the clearance and angle of log boom deployment to increase the capturing rate of floating debris, meanwhile minimizing the side-effect to inland waterway transportation users.

The research team, led by the Director of MTC, Dr. Henry Kang, had a meeting session with Boyan Slat at the riverside of Klang river in a recent event hosted by Landasan Lumayan Sdn. Bhd., a company mandated to spearhead the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) urban rejuvenation project.

From the endeavor of all stakeholders, the water quality index (WQI) in the Klang River was reduced from Class V (highly contaminated) in 2016 to Class III in 2021 (or better 48% of the days in the year).
