Biography

Ida Idayu Muhamad is a Professor and Head of the Food and Biomaterial Engineering Research Group in Department of Bioprocess and Polymer Engineering, School of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and a Fellow of Institute of Food Science and Technology, United Kingdom. Currently she is the Chairman of the Scientific Advisors also Head of Biomaterial Cluster for the IJN-UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Centre, for research collaboration between National Heart Institute (Malaysia) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Prior to this present position, she lead the Bioprocess Engineering Department (2010-2013) and appointed as management committee of the Centre of Fiqh, Science and Technology UTM (CFiRST) (2011-2013). She earned her degrees from Universiti Sains Malaysia then Ph.D (2004) from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) England. She is a Chartered Scientist and founder of the Food and Biomaterial Engineering Research Group (FoBERG) at the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering.

Her areas of expertise include food and biomaterial processing; active-smart packaging, food safety and sustainability; nanotechnology, nutraceuticals and drug delivery. She has supervised and co-supervised more than 60 post-graduate students and post-doctorates. She served as a technical panel for assessment of grants applications such as E-Sciencefund and Technofund for MOSTI and reviewer for 21 peer-reviewed ISI journals. She is also affiliated to several professional societies such as Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE), Controlled Release Society, Asia-Pacific Institute of Food Professionals and Institute of Food Science and Technology.

Dr Ida’s main research and consultancies are in modeling of particulate food systems, biopolymer processing, active and intelligent packaging. As a Food Lead auditor, she also trains food industries for implementation and auditing on industrial food safety systems (GMP, GHP, cGMP and HACCP) and Halal Management.

Apart from research and academic world, Dr Ida has been a trainer for Graduate Leadership and Assessment Development in collaboration with Deloitte.

Since 2011, she has founded the Food and Biomaterial Engineering Research Group or known as FoBERG. FoBERG is a research group that focuses on the areas of food and biomaterial engineering in the School of Chemical & Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.  Initially, this group was composed of two staff and five students and now have grown to seven staff and more than 20 students.
