ISKANDAR PUTERI, 6 December 2016 – Media and Game Innovation Centre of Excellence (MaGICX) has been launched by The Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, during the 10th Year Anniversary of Iskandar Malaysia(IM10).

MaGICX is a strategic cooperation between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) to support and promote the development and ecosystem of creative industry that focuses on gamification and enrichment of digital content. MaGICX will play an integral part as the anchor for the Iskandar Malaysia Innovation Valley envisioned to offer industry players/SMEs/clients technical expertise / consultation, research/product development, business development, publishing, marketing and/or training in producing commercially.

MaGICX aspires to create a financially sustainable Digital Research and Incubation Centre that contributes toward talent development, industry promotion, knowledge-sharing, international collaboration, research & product development, as well as marketing and productization.

MaGICX is based at UTM which is currently incubating four companies of 20 pax and is looking for promising new start-ups to be added to their list. With the incubator ecosystem, MaGICX provides the perfect stepping stone for start-ups to have a stable footing to learn and strengthen further their capability to compete in the industry.

MaGICX is currently equipped with the technical capabilities that includes Augmented and Virtual Reality, Microsoft Kinect, Leap Motion, Hologram, Data Glove, Motion Capture, Brain Computer Interaction, Simulation, Visualisation, Computer Vision, Advanced CG and 3D Printing.

MaGICX focus on gamification on the following areas – Interactive Technology, Education, Islamic Media, Medical & Healthcare, Oil & Gas and Culture & Heritage. Even though being a start-up, MaGICX has completed and/or secured number of research and commercial projects between 2015 to 2016 that includes projects in Augmented Reality, Kinect Enhancements, Mobile Application and Web System.

MaGICX Chief Executive Officer, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Shahrizal Sunar, said by establishing that initiatives, MaGICX will play an integral part as the anchor for the creative industry in the Iskandar Malaysia Innovation Valley that will attract talents, start-ups, academicians, research proponents, government support and ventures capitalists that will enrich and promote the region to be the new destination for games and gamification development.
