I obtained my Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) from West Virginia University, USA in 1985 after which I worked as a Civil Engineer with Jeffa Construction Sdn Bhd and then with Intertex Sdn Bhd. At the time I joined Jeffa Construction, this company was involved in a joint venture transmission line project with Samsung Electric of South Korea. The owner of the project was Lembage Letrik Negara (LLN), presently known as Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). Among the tasks that I had to perform were surveying of tower locations, supervision of site investigations (Mackintosh probing and drilling of boreholes), stub setting, design of tower foundations, supervising construction of tower foundations (shallow foundation, driven piles and bored piles), supervising segregation of tower parts and tower erections. Working with Intertex I was given the tasks among others to perform project estimation and scheduling for a proposed housing project in Pahang.

I joined Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1987. Then I pursued my study towards the Masters of Science in Engineering (Civil) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA from 1990 to 1991. I obtained my PhD (Civil Engineering) in 2004 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a thesis entitled Soil Improvement by Electrokinetic Process.

I started my career at UTM as an Assistant Lecturer A where I was attached to the Department of Geotechnics and Transportation (JGP), Faculty of Civil Engineering. Since then I have been delivering lectures in the areas of soil mechanics, geotechnics, geoenvironmental engineering and statics. Among the subjects at diploma level that I had to teach were Statics (DKA 1072), Soil Mechanics (DKA 1412/DAW 2412) and soil laboratory (DKA 1051, DKA 2952). In addition to diploma level, I have been given the tasks to teach first degree students. The subjects are Soil Mechanics (SKA 2413/SAW 3413/SAA 2413/SAC 2413/SAE 2413) and Geotechnics I (SAB 2722) and Geotechnics II (SAB 3712).

Due to the increasing numbers of postgrauate students, I have been given the responsibilities to deliver lectures to postgraduate students majoring in Geotechnical Engineering and Structural Engineering. Two subjects in geotechnical engineering that I am involved in are Advanced Geotechnical Analysis and Design (MAB 7023/MAW 1723) and Geoenvironmental Engineering (MAB 7083/MAW 1763). Lectures on Advanced Materials in Construction (MAB 1043/MAW 1033) are given to students majoring in Structural Engineering.
