Friction Study of Vertical Finned Crystallizer for Progressive Freeze Concentration System

Abstract

Progressive freeze concentration is gaining acceptance in solution concentration process as it could provide an easy
separation and ice purification with relatively low energy. In order to improve the process performance, a vertical finned crystallizer was developed. This new crystallizer could provide a higher heat transfer area for the process, hence increasing the productivity. In this study, friction characteristics of the crystallizer which include the calculation of friction factor and friction loss are investigated. Calculating the friction loss is necessary to determine the appropriate requirements and size of pump. The result shows that the value of friction factor and total head loss are low which indicate that low increment of pump energy is required to overcome those losses.
