Let’s Gamify!

Shahdatunnaim,  my very first student who is doing research on the topic – Gamification applying Design Science research methodology. Dr Norasnita is her co-Supervisor.

Alhamdulillah,  she defended her proposal with no corrections.  But,  the data collection and data analysis is not that friendly to her hehehe.

I expected that. Data collection method is through interviews. The time to meet and interview experts from various universities takes months.  Then,  the time to analyze data takes months,  then the time to digest and interpret data too takes months!

I always remind her:

“Shahda,  its ok.  I am sure your PhD will be a good one,  fruitful although you took a longer time.”

“Dr,  mula² saya memang blur bila analyse data tu.  Tapi bila saya dah jumpa IBU dia,  haa baru faham and baru lah laju”.

That was her explanation to us on how she found the LIGHT to report her findings.

She explained to us the difficulties that she faced while analysing and interpreting data.  After a long exploration of the data,  finally,  YES!  I FOUND THE MOTHER!  😆

This student of us is always cheerful! Always positive.

GOT?  Yes of course I love my students to GOT. But as a supervisor,  a coach,  a facilitator, most important is we must understand our student’s capabilities. Learning should be personalised.

Adult learning is different.  Adults have more than PhD to think of especially female students.  They have other commitments too. Most important is to hold their hands ‘virtually’ to ensure that they never give up!

Few more major steps for her to go through.  Inshaa ALLAH,  may ALLAH ease her journey. She is one of those lucky ones who was supported by MyBrain funding from the Ministry of Education.  Yes,  inshaa ALLAH,  we will make sure that the research is an excellent one.

“Bukan biashe biashe”

ALLAHU AKBAR!

Sam Song and his Masters Thesis : Finally done!

I can still remember we met at the Knowledge Management Lab at Level 4, N28, School of Computing.

That time,  Sam eagerly explained to me about his passion about diet and food.  Interestingly, it is not diet for losing weight which we normally do.  But it is about motivating people to have appetite to eat! This is totally different from our context in Malaysia where we Over Eat! 😂

Sam is from Ghana.  Due to his interest in motivating people to eat, he has created a FB Page named Goodness of Life sharing pictures of food.

On the other hand,  I was proposing a topic related to Intermittent Fasting.

After three semesters of conducting research, this is the outcome, a dissertation titled “Design of Gamified Intermittent Fasting Mobile Application Prolong Use”.

The Abstract of Sam’s research can be found here : [Abstract]. He has also presented a paper at the 6th International Conference on Research and Innovation in Information Systems (2019). The paper is awaiting to be published this year by IEEE.

Congratulations Sam!

At DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, JB attending ICRIIS 2019. We were with the Keynote Speaker Prof. Dr Atreyi Kankanhali from NUS, Singapore
Sam with his hard bound dissertation (New UTM Thesis format).

My 9th PhD Graduate : Congratulations Dr Kayode Adenuga!

The different journeys…

Today I had a meeting with 4 of my PhD students.

First, Congratulations to Dr Kayode Adenuga, inshaa ALLAH he will be submitting his hard bound thesis next week after the Chinese New Year holidays. He completed his PhD thesis on time – in six semesters! Alhamdulillah. Not easy though, wife and children is in Nigeria all the way he is doing his PhD. Came all the way from Nigeria with NO sponsorship at all. Alhamdulillah, when he arrived here, applied for a scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia and HE GOT IT!

I would say, Alhamdulillah, MOHE has invested to the right person. Dr Kayode Adenuga has been an active postgraduate student. Academic wise, he has published few indexed journal articles of which one of them is in a Q1 WOS journal. He has participated the 3-Minute Thesis Competition (as far as I can remember 2nd runner up at the faculty level). On other aspect, he was the President of Nigerian Student Society and has involved as committees of a few conferences held and oragnized by UTM Research units. One of them was icriis.org

AGAIN, CONGRATULATIONS DR KAYODE ADENUGA!

On another note, the other three students whom I met:

I have advised one of them to defer his study for this semester due to his work commitment (doing PhD part time)

Another one, will be reporting duty at the university that she is working at. It is the end of the full study leave. This will be a great challenge, but I believe she can manage inshaa ALLAH. We aim that she will complete her PhD by December 2018, inshaa ALLAH.

The third student, alhamdulillah completed his data collection. He has requested to travel back to his home country for his wife’s medical treatment. He has requested this since last semester but I have advised him to make sure that he complete his data collection. We aim that he will submit his thesis by end of August, inshaa ALLAH.

Difficult decisions have to be made from time to time while on the PhD journey, but hand on there. Make doa, ask from ALLAH. May ALLAH ease the journey.

Another PhD Graduate – Maryam Salahshour

Last few years, this lady met me to request change of Supervisor since her supervisor is trasferring from UTM Skudai to UTM Kuala Lumpur. She insisted that I become her supervisor, however I was reluctant since at that particular time I was really occupied and committed supervising other PhD and MSc students. As the PhD Information Systems program coordinator at that time, I proposed Dr Halina Mohamed Dahlan as her supevisor and I became the co-Supervisor.

Alhamdulillah, she had passed her viva in March 2016 and yesterday we met for me to sign on her thesis as a co-supervisor. Alhamdulillah, finally, the hard bound thesis were on the way to be submitted. She will be graduating soon during UTM Convocation Ceremony in October 2016. Congatulations Maryam! YOU DID IT!
